Defense Remains Unmatched

The Eagles edged Cal Poly Pomona at home on Saturday, winning by a 1-0 final margin.

LA MIRADA --- Through three games in 2021, no team has scored on the Eagles. The latest team to feel the pressure of the Biola defense was Cal Poly Pomona, who fell to BU on Saturday night at Al Barbour Field.

With the defense maintaining a clean sheet, a Pontus Gitselov goal was all that was needed to score the 1-0 win. The narrow victory marked the third-straight win and third-straight shutout for Biola. The team extended both impressive streaks to three for the first time since the 2016 campaign.

Protecting the net for BU, Luis Rodriguez earned the win and the shutout with 90 minutes played. The senior collected three saves on the way to his second clean sheet of the year and the sixth of his career.

The backline was fantastic on Saturday, limiting the opportunities for the Broncos' attack. Haiko Hovak, Lawrence Kwazema, Henry Reeves and Izaac Zausch worked together on the defense to offer great support for Rodriguez in the net. The foursome has been crucial in each shutout effort with the defenders compiling at least 258 minutes played through the three contests. Hovak and Zausch have yet to step off the pitch, logging all 90 minutes in all three matches in 2021.

On the attack, Clement Michelet was the Eagle to start the deciding run in the 25th minute. The midfielder gained possession just beyond midfield and blew by the defense down the left side of the field. Realizing the opportunity at hand, BU forward Gitselov sprinted in sync with Michelet.

As the duo reached the box, Michelet led Gitselov with a perfect pass, before the forward used his left foot to scoot the ball into the back of the net. The goal was the lone shot of the first half for Biola. The Maryville University transfer notched the game-winner, while tallying his first career score for BU.

Biola improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2016 with the one-goal triumph.

The BU squad will look to remain undefeated in its next contest at San Bernardino on Wednesday.
