Biola Battles

Eagles show promise on both sides of the ball but ultimately fall to Cal Baptist, 16-8.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Water Polo continued to show signs of progress as the Eagles battled but ultimately fell 16-8 to Cal Baptist at Splash Aquatic Center on Thursday afternoon.

Biola kept Cal Baptist at bay in the first quarter, as the Eagles trailed by two goals with a score of 3-1 courtesy of a Kenny Wulf goal. Wulf would go on to score three more goals for the Eagles while recording an assist and drawing two defensive exclusions.

The Eagles continued to apply pressure to the Lancers as they were only outscored by two goals in the second quarter as John Grasso and Maxwell Osborn were able to secure back-to-back scores for Biola.

Biola trailed by only four scores at the half and took advantage of a power play early in the third quarter as Wulf connected with Will Tibbets to bring Biola within four scores of Cal Baptist.

A huge shot block by Grasso gave the Eagles posession and allowed Nordell to call a time out. Excellent defense and great strategy lead to a perfectly executed Matthew Vinson goal assisted by Christian Trapp halfway through the third auarter.

Kenny Wulf went on to tack on his third goal for Biola as the defense continued to present the offense with great opportunities.

Nordell is starting to run out of ways to describe how big of an impact Mitchell Carpenter's presence in the goal has been for Biola. Carpenter logged 13 saves for the Eagles, just four saves short of his career high 17 saves against Pomona-Pitzer in the opening tournament of the year.

With another Western Water Polo Association match in the books, Biola will shift its attention to the Gary Troyer Tournament where the Eagles will face McKendree and Nay on October 1 followed by Ottowa  and Concordia on October 2.
