Fought Until the End

Biola never let up in a home match against Cal State Los Angeles, dropping the contest, 2-0.

LA MIRADA --- The BU men's soccer squad (3-2) battled to overcome a first half deficit but was unable to complete the comeback in a 2-0 loss to Cal State Los Angeles (2-1-1).

The Eagles had their work cut out for them on Saturday, taking on the 2019 NCAA DII National Runner-Ups at Al Barbour Field. CSULA showed its strength early in the contest, posting a pair of scores in the opening 16 minutes of action.

Misfortune hit BU in the 10th minute, as a misstep from Luis Rodriguez allowed a goal from the visitors, while causing the BU goalie to leave the field with an injury. The Golden Eagles added to their lead with a give and go inside the box just after the 15 minute mark.

Throughout the contest, the two teams fought evenly in the midfield. The possession would seamlessly flow back and forth between BU and CSULA with neither team dominating the ball.

The BU offense remained quiet in the first half, launching just two shots.

Looking for a comeback, Biola turned up the heat in the second half. Seven shots came in from the Eagles, while also creating three corner kicks. Four shots were directed within the posts of the goal but all four were stopped by the CSULA keeper.

Biola's best opportunity came in the 68th minute. Izaac Zausch drew contact in the box, giving BU a penalty kick. Senior Malik Shaheed stepped up for the penalty but sailed it high for a shot off-target.

BU kept the pressure on, offering two more quality shot attempts over the next seven minutes. Shaheed capped off a Biola attack with a shot on-goal from the top of the box. The ball looked as though it would sneak inside the right post but CSULA keeper, Alvaro Unanua, pushed the ball away for a diving save. Second half substitute, Moose Bonat, launched a fantastic shot that was headed for the upper 90 but was once again deflected away by Unanua.

The tough defeat moved BU to 3-2 on the season. The Eagles will be back in action in a non-conference bout at No. 5 Azusa Pacific on Tuesday at 7:30 pm.
