BU Suffers First Defeat

The Eagles battled to a narrow loss on Wednesday afternoon, falling to CSU San Bernardino, 2-1.

SAN BERNARDINO --- The BU men's soccer squad hit the road on Wednesday to take on the Yotes of Cal State San Bernardino. A back and forth match fell the way of CSUSB (2-0-1), as a late second half score sealed the 2-1 win for the Yotes.

The Biola defense has been stout throughout the 2021 campaign. Entering the midweek matchup at CSUSB, the Eagles maintained a streak of 270 minutes of scoreless soccer. That streak came to an end in the 19th minute of action, ending the impressive run at just over 288 minutes.

The goal from the host team opened up the scoring for the competition, as the Yotes jumped out to the early 1-0 advantage.

Through the first half, CSUSB was on the attack, logging eight shots with three landing on-goal. BU responded with five shots of its own, while also gathering a corner kick opportunity. Lawrence Kwazema offered a great shot in the 22nd minute, forcing a diving save from the CSUSB goalie, which created the corner for BU.

Immediately after the halftime break, the Biola offense kicked into gear. Within the first four minutes of the second half BU recorded two shots on-goal, one corner kick and one goal.

The tying tally for the Eagles came in from Malik Shaheed. The senior converted for his first goal in a Biola uniform with help from defender Izaac Zausch, who delivered the assist. Shaheed's goal in the 49th minute knotted the match at one apiece, leaving the contest in balance with 41 minutes remaining.

The Yotes regained control after the score from the Eagles, launching six shots compared to zero from BU over the next 25 minutes of action. In the 74th minute, CSUSB connected on the game-winning goal for the 2-1 final score.

Biola fought in the comeback effort once again but only found one corner kick and one shot in the final seven minutes before time expired.

BU will return home for its next contest, taking on Cal State Los Angeles on Saturday at 7:00 pm.
