Thursday Split

No. 6 Northwest Nazarene earned the win in game two, as the Eagles split the Thursday doubleheader.

NAMPA, Idaho --- The back half of Thursday's doubleheader saw a new winning team, as the hosting sixth-ranked Northwest Nazarene Nighthawks picked up the win. BU fought hard in the contest but four runs in three innings from NNU secured the 6-3 final score.

The Nighthawks found their offense early in game two, after being shut out in the first game of the day. NNU took advantage of a wild pitch to place runners in scoring position for back-to-back scoring plays and a 2-0 edge.

Two empty frames did not deter the Eagles as they came to the plate in the top of the third. Rhett Stein took one for the team with a hit-by-pitch to get movement on the bases. Two outs followed before a double to left center from Johnny Sage brought home the first run for BU.

Next up, RobertAnthony Cruz saw a 1-2 count, before roping another extra-base hit. A second-straight double for Biola evened the game at 2-2, as Sage touched home.

Northwest Nazarene was quick to respond, rebuilding its lead with three runs between the third and fourth frames.

In the fifth inning, Stein led off in a similar fashion, reaching base with a single up the middle. Once again with two outs and a runner on first, the top of the lineup came to bat. Sage was hit by a pitch, leading to another crucial spot for Cruz. The senior singled to right field bringing home the team's third run of the contest.

Cruz notched his 13th multi-hit effort on Thursday, going two-for-four with a team-high two runs batted in.

AJ Ortiz offered a strong inning on the bump for BU, recording three-straight outs and eliminating a scoring threat. With runners on second and third and one out, Ortiz struck out back-to-back hitters to close out a scoreless sixth frame.

Biola will be back in action in another doubleheader against NNU on Friday at 11:00 am.
