'Pen Gets the Job Done

Brayden Englert kept the Warriors at bay while Gilbert Lopez earned the win and Tyler Mead earned the save.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --- Biola's bullpen impressed as Gilbert Lopez and Tyler Mead were sharp, helping the Eagles hang onto the 4-3 victory in game one of Saturday's doubleheader at Westmont.

While the bullpen has been a question mark for the Eagles this season, Calhoon was pleased with what he saw from his relievers today. "Gil did a great job out there today. He kept us in the game and even when he ran into a little bit of trouble, Tyler Mead was there to pick him up and finish out the game."

"When you've got your pitching keeping you in the game and your bats come through give us the lead there's not much more you can ask for," said Calhoon.

The Eagles did not record a hit through the first four innings but managed to hold a 1-0 lead over Westmont. After reaching on an error, Connor Kostecka advanced and scored on another error to put the Eagles ahead.

Starting Pitcher Brayden Englert fired three shutout innings to start the contest. Englert ran into trouble in the fourth inning as the Warriors recorded three hits and a walk to score three, giving Westmont the 3-1 advantage. Englert surrendered three runs across five innings while striking out three, keeping the Eagles in the game.

The Biola bats made sure to pick up their starter, as Tyler White worked a lead off walk and Rhett Stein doubled to give BU two in scoring position with only one away. Kostecka scored White from third on a sacrifice fly while also moving Stein up to third base, putting the tying run just 90 feet away. A passed ball scored Stein from third to tie the game 3-3.

With a new ball game, Englert returned to the mound and worked around two singles to put up a scoreless inning while striking out two.

Brandon Cody singled up the middle in the sixth inning and stole second to give Biola a runner in scoring position with two out with White at the plate. Cody was a little too aggressive on the bases and was caught stealing third base to end the inning and end BU's scoring opportunity.

Gil Lopez took over for Englert and retired the side in order on eight pitches while ending the frame with a strikeout. Lopez returned to the mound for the seventh inning and mirrored this first inning, retiring the side in order and ending with a swinging strikeout.

In his third straight inning, Lopez was perfect, this time retiring the side on three swinging strikeouts.

A pitching change in the top of the ninth worked in Biola's favor. Ryan Gallegos worked a lead off walk and advanced to second on a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt by Cody. Calhoon elected to pinch hit Keith Walker for Tyler White. Walker battled to work the count full and reached across the plate to line a double to left field, scoring Gallegos and giving Biola the 4-3 lead.

Lopez returned to the mound in line for the win and in need of the final three outs to earn the victory for the Eagles. After being ahead of the Warriors lead off batter 1-2, Lopez issued the leadoff walk to allow his first base runner of the contest.

Lopez struggled with his command in the ninth inning issuing back-to-back walks resulting in Calhoon going to the 'pen with two on and no outs. Tyler Mead came on in a tough situation, trying to upset the Warriors on their senior day.

With the tying run on second, Shults dropped down a bunt. Heads up fielding from Mead retired the lead runner at third. A close call worked in favor of Biola while Westmont's dugout was quite displeased with the call.

With one out and runners on first and second, Mead stuck with his curveball to get Perez to strikeout looking and put the Eagles one out away from a win. Down to their last strike, Westmont put the ball in play but provided Kostecka with a routine 6-3 to end the game.
