BU Drops Nail-Biter

Point Loma and Biola were evenly matched on Saturday, as the Sea Lions pulled off the 4-3 victory over BU in the PacWest Tourney.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- The PacWest Tournament wrapped up at the Surprise Tennis and Racquet Club on Saturday, as the BU men's tennis squad posted a 10-win season for the second time in three years.

A quarterfinals loss did not deter the Eagles, as the team walked into the consolation bracket and took down Metro State to move into a fifth-place match against Point Loma. The final match of the tourney was thrilling with the contest going until the final singles matchup and ending in a 4-3 fashion in favor of PLNU.

Doubles play was dominated by Biola on Saturday. The first flight featured Alexei Prokopchuk and Antonio Rosales Varona picking up an easy 6-2 win, for their second-straight victory together. Isaac Cordova and Alex Sedeno completed the best-of-three sequence with a 6-4 triumph on court No. 3, giving Biola the 1-0 lead.

From the No. 2 spot Sebastian Herrera and Erik Martinez were in position to improve on their 8-1 record but saw their match ended while holding a 6-5 edge.

Singles play brought high-level back-and-forth action as the match progressed. Point Loma quickly balanced the score with a straight-sets win on court No. 1.

Biola responded from the third flight with Rosales Varona gaining the upper hand over David Strassburger. The sophomore posted a 6-3, 6-4 rout to put BU back in front and increase his season win total to eight.

Once again, the Sea Lions would not go away, battling back to a tie at two points each, after corralling a win from the No. 6 spot.

Courts No. 4 and No. 5 also traded points with Isaac Cordova winning for Biola from the fourth flight. Cordova added his eighth singles win of the year, while winning in the third set for the second time (6-4, 1-6, 6-3).

With the match knotted at three points each, the competition came down to the contest on the second court between BU's Herrera and PLNU's Yuki Okamoto. The competition was fierce, as Herrera struck first with a 6-2 triumph in set number one, before Okamoto responded with a 6-4 showing in set two.

The third set was a battle with neither player gaining a significant advantage. Okamoto put the pressure on, opening up a 6-5 lead. The momentum stayed in Okamoto's hands, as the Sea Lion ended the match with a 7-5 final set.

Despite the nail-biting loss, BU finished the season at an even 10-10 and a sixth-place finish in the PacWest Tournament.
