Bats Back 'Pen

Biola bats continued to provide run support in the 9-7 win over Concordia.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola took game one of Saturday's doubleheader against Concordia 9-7. While the bullpen continued to falter, the bats were sure to provide BU with run support to seal the victory. Leadoff hitter Johnny Sage was 3-5 with one RBI while Ben Smith was 2-5 with a three-run homer.

Starting pitcher Andrew Beauvais struggled with his command early on, issuing back to back four pitch walks. Beauvais and the Eagles were able to get out of the bases loaded jam limiting the damage to only one run.

Beau did a great job and bounced back to give Biola four consecutive scoreless innings after surrendering the lone run in the first. Beauvais pitched five innings of two hit ball, while striking out five and issuing five free passes.

The first five innings of the game were a pitching duel, but Biola was able to even the contest in the bottom of the fifth.

Connor Kostecka led off the fifth with a double down the left field line while Johnny Sage made a productive out to put Kostecka on third with only one out. Taking a page out of Popint Loma's book, CUI elected to intentionally walk RobertAnthony Cruz, potentially setting up an inning ending double play.

Jacob Portaro stepped to the plate with one out and runners on the corners looking to bring Kostecka home. Cruz was nearly thrown out stealing second base, fortunately the throw bounced under the glove of Concordia's shortstop and rolled into centerfield, scoring Kostecka and tying the game at 1-1.

The Eagles were unable to cash in a bases loaded opportunity as CUI did a great job to get out of the inning and limited BU to only one run.

Keith Walker would get the sixth inning and try to put up another zero on the scoreboard for BU. CUI took the 2-1 lead on bloop single to shallow left field putting runners on the corners with only one out for Walker. A base running miscue for CUI looked to be a certain out for Biola, unfortunately a throwing error from catcher Ben Smith led to a Concordia run giving the green Eagles a 3-1 lead. Concordia added onto their lead with a double through the left side to plate another run for a 4-1 ballgame.

The Biola bats did a great job at responding and picking up their bullpen. Smith led off the sixth inning with a single on the first pitch he saw while newly entered second baseman Andrew Lujan made a productive out to move Smith up to third base.

A Concordia pitching change worked in favor of Biola as the Eagles tagged Andrew Pinedo for four runs to take a 6-4 lead.

Pitching held the upper hand in the seventh inning, as both teams put up a zero on the scoreboard. AJ Ortiz worked around a hit and a walk as his defense turned an inning ending double play.

Ortiz returned to the mound for the 8th inning and surrendered two runs, tying the game at 6-6. Calhoon elected to go to his pen again with two on and one out. It was Tyler Mead who answered the call, Mead immediately gave up a double scoring another run for CUI which was charged to Ortiz and gave Concordia the 7-6 lead before getting out of the inning.

The Biola bats responded yet again. With two on and one out, Ben Smith cranked a three-run homer to give BU the 9-7 advantage.

Mead returned to the mound in line for the win and in need of the final three outs. The 6'3 sophomore struck out the first Concordia batter in the inning with his beautiful 12-6 breaking ball. Although it wasn't a clean inning, Mead was able to retire the side and secure the win for the Biola Boys.

The win improves Biola t0 10-14 and 10-11 in PacWest play as they look to break .500 in conference play with a win in game two.
