No. 6 APU Halts BU Tourney Run

The BU women’s tennis squad battled in the PacWest Tournament Semifinals on Friday but came up short against No. 6 APU.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- The PacWest Tournament Semifinals featured a faceoff between the top-seeded and sixth-ranked Azusa Pacific Cougars and the fourth-seeded Biola Eagles.

For the second time this season, the Cougars found the edge over Biola. In the Friday morning match, APU came out on a mission, completing the 4-0 win to advance to the PacWest Championship on Saturday.

Doubles play included a team of Amelia Kitts and Ines Diaz on the third court for BU. The duo joined forces for the first time this season and were unable to beat out their APU adversaries, 2-6.

The second flight fell the way of the Cougars as well, giving APU the one-point lead to start the day.

Back-to-back singles sweeps gave APU a commanding 3-0 advantage, needing just one more point to clinch the match. Anna Savchenko stepped up next for Azusa Pacific, securing the win for the Cougars with a triumph on court No. 2.

Mary Brascia impressed from the No. 4 spot on Friday. The sophomore opened up with a first set victory, before building a 4-2 lead in set number two. The end of the match cut Brascia's contest short, as she looked to stay undefeated from the fourth flight and move to 4-0 this season.

In the No. 6 spot, Madison Swaney put together a strong effort in her first action in just under a month. The senior fought through a tiebreaker in the first set and had her match cut short and marked unfinished.

BU will complete its road trip to Surprise, Arizona with a competition against second-seeded Concordia for third place on Saturday at 9:00 am.
