BU Advances

The PacWest Quarterfinals matchup between Biola and Point Loma heavily favored the Eagles, as they move on in the conference tourney.

SURPRISE, Ariz. --- In their second appearance in the PacWest Women's Tennis Tournament, the Biola Eagles landed their first win on Thursday. The BU squad defeated the Point Loma Sea Lions in the quarterfinals by a final score of 4-1.

The Eagles collected their second-straight win against PLNU to begin their 2021 PacWest Tournament run. The first meeting between the two teams fell the way of Point Loma at the start of the season but BU reversed the results in three matches, showing the team's overall improvement through the course of the year.

One of the matchups that changed hands was in doubles play, as Brooke Fager and Lilly McNeill captured the doubles point for BU. The duo cruised in their contest, 6-2, following up a strong showing from Colbeyshae Emery and Mary Brascia, who won on court No. 1, 6-1.

As the competition shifted to singles play, Biola did not take its foot off the gas pedal. McNeill was relentless in her match, closing out a straight-sets win in quick fashion (6-1, 6-3). The triumph pushed the freshman's season record to an impressive 12-3 mark.

A 2-0 Biola lead was temporarily challenged, as PLNU took court No. 2 by way of retirement.

The momentum returned to BU through the No. 1 spot of Emery. The First-Team All-PacWest selection dominated the first and third sets (6-1, 5-7, 6-2) for her 13th win of the year.

Another standout with double-digit wins this season clinched the victory for Biola. Mary Brascia edged Gabi Armas in back-to-back sets (7-5, 7-6) to finish the match for a 4-1 BU win. Brascia secured the match with a 7-2 tiebreaker, giving the sophomore a 13-2 record in 2021.

With the match clinched, the remaining singles contests went unfinished. Despite the unclear ending, Fager had built a comfortable advantage that was heading towards another Biola point. The righty grabbed set number one, before opening up a 5-1 lead in the third set prior to the abrupt ending.

BU will be back in action on Friday morning at 9:00 am in a matchup against No. 6 Azusa Pacific in the PacWest Tournament Semifinals.
