Biola concludes its whirlwind 2021 with a PCSC Championship!

April 16, 2021

IRVINE, Calif. --- THE STATEMENT IS MADE.

Biola Swim & Dive set out this season to make an impact in the conference and on the NCAA Division II level. With Friday's Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference championship win, Head Coach Ryan Kauth's Eagles did just that.

A record-setting relay swim in the final event of the meet clinched Biola's first-ever PCSC title by way of a four-point win over their biggest competition, Pepperdine (1,494-1,490).

The Waves were up by double-digits headed into the Eagles' final individual event of the day, but Audrey Vermeulen led a group of five Biola scorers in the 1,650-freestyle to take back the lead headed into the final relay.

Vermeulen won the conference title with a 17:48.00 flat while helping Kellynn Hayes (4th - 18:21.34), Ashlynn Griffin (5th - 18:42.75), Kristina Arcerito (6th - 19:24.65) and Elena McAdams (7th - 20:00.97) combined to rack up 130 crucial points for the Eagles.

Headed into the closing 400-freestyle relay Biola had a 12-point advantage over Pepperdine and knew it had to finish no lower than third-place in the relay to clinch the championship outright.

Turns out Kauth's squad did not need the luxury of that third-place option as Meghan Tolman, Liza Parahnevich, Meredyth Rubie and Kolya Vos set a new school record with a 3:28.26 to finish second in the meet's final event and clinch the championship.

Grace Kling and Kolya Vos both picked up individual PCSC Championships on Friday to join Vermeulen. Kling's top time came in the 200-breaststroke where she finished with a 2:17.43. It was a big win as she finished five seconds ahead of the second-place swimmer from Pepperdine. Anna Haaksma also made the podium in the breaststroke, using a personal-best 2:22.88 to finish third.

Vos's individual win was in the 100-freestyle (:51.04), giving Biola the clean sweep of the sprint freestyle events. Meghan Tolman won the 50-free on Wednesday and finished second to Vos in the 100 today (:51.90).

In addition to helping the championship-clinching relay, Liza Parahnevich began the day by setting a school record of her own in the 200-backstroke. She found her way on the podium with a third-place finish and a 2:04.01.

Rounding out the individual events was the 200-butterfly, where Biola finished 8th, 9th and 10th to claim precious points as they sought the title. Anna Cohee (2:12.04) led the group that also included Faith McAllister (2:12.78) and Katelyn Harper (2:13.09).

Throughout the week, coach Kauth's Eagles landed eight event wins, 20 total podium finishes and four new school records. Kolya Vos accounted for three individual championships and helped Biola to its relay championship to earn PCSC Swimmer of the Meet honors. Biola also earns 10 Cornerstone Cup points for this win over Azusa Pacific, who finished fifth with 807 points.

The men's team is in the lead as well and finishes off its championship effort later Friday afternoon.
