April 14, 2021

IRVINE, Calif. --- Patrick Waggoner and the men's 200-freestyle relay team shone brightly as Biola Men's Swim & Dive completed day one at the 2021 Pacific Collegiate Swimming & Diving Conference Championships. The men's side sits in first place through the first day with 275 total points.

Waggoner won an individual title and broke the school record in the 200-IM with a 1:52.36. The relay team of Waggoner, Jonas Huckabay, Tanner Smith and Jake Michelsen picked up the other event win for BU on day one, swimming a school record time of 1:23.53 to open the day with a victory.

Waggoner's 200-IM was not the only standout performance in that event for the Eagles. He led a group of five men inside the top-10 to score big points for Biola. Nathan Schwantes picked up second-place in the event with a career-best 1:55.43. Clayton Owens (4th - 1:56.19), Noah Benson (8th - 1:59.74) and Jackson Black (10th - 1:59.83) were the others to place in the top-10.

Biola picked up a runner-up finish and another school record in the second relay of the day as Tanner Smith, James Gamette, Matthew Trejo and Huckabay combined to go 3:24.69 in the 400-medley relay to only be beat by the top team from Fresno Pacific.

Freestyle ruled the rest of the day as the men competed in both the 50-free and the 500-free. Biola had three inside the top-10 in the 500-freestyle, paced by Gabe Weber's third-place effort (4:40.72). Matthew Tejo (6th - 4:46.33) and Dylan Pon (7th - 4:46.70) both joined Weber inside that top-10 and Colin Snyder (4:51.62) also scored for BU with an 11th-place effort.

The 50-free went off in the blink of an eye and saw three Eagles claim spots inside the top-6 to bring in more than 50 points for BU. Jake Michelsen (:21.09), Jonas Huckabay (:21.21) and Tanner Smith (:21.25) finished back-to-back-to-back in 4-5-6 among nearly 40 swimmers. Gamette was not much further back, placing eighth (:21.46) to score 11 points for BU.
