BU Snag Season Opener

Eagles Dominant, Beat Vanguard in Season Opener

COSTA MESA, Calif. --- After going 15 months without any competition, BU Volleyball proved ready for action today at Vanguard University as they took down the Lions with a final score 3-1. Set Scores were 25-16, 20-25, 25-20, 25-12.

Head Coach Aaron Seltzer was excited for his team to be competing once again. "Obviously 15-16 months is a long layoff, today was about what we expected," said Coach Seltzer. "We had the chance to play our entire roster, work through some nerves, and play 4 different lineups. I would say from that perspective it was a success!"

After surrendering the first point of the day to VU, Biola did not hesitate and made quick work of Vanguard in the first set of the day (25-16). The Eagles did not surrender the lead again in set one against the Lions.

Set two was a bit more evenly matched as BU couldn't quite close the door in the back-and-forth contest, dropping the second set to Vanguard with a score of 20-25. The Eagles wouldn't sit on the loss too long.

Biola was dominant in the final two sets to defeat Vanguard in four on Saturday in Costa Mesa with scores of 25-20 in set three and 25-12 in set four to slam the door and take the match.

Seniors Bekah Roth and Vanessa Garcia played big roles for the Eagles. Garcia connected with her attackers for 16 assists on the day, she also tallied nine digs in the win. Middle blocker Bekah Roth was dominant for BU throughout the match. Roth recorded ten kills while hitting .533 over the four sets.

Defensively for BU, senior Sami Hover produced ten digs for the Eagles, joining Roth and Garcia as another senior leading the way for Head Coach Aaron Seltzer. Hover was joined by Garcia and Abby Brewster who added nine and eight digs for the Eagles respectively.

The Eagles return to action on Monday, March 8 as they host Alaska Fairbanks in a scrimmage. BU looks to even the matchup history between the two teams as they suffered the defeat in their only contest with Alaska Fairbanks in 2017. Tune into the action here!
