Roybal Tosses Shutout

A complete game shutout from Raylene Roybal carried Biola to a 1-0 victory over Azusa Pacific.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A first inning run was all that the Eagles needed, as the host squad nabbed its first PacWest win in a 1-0 win against APU. The narrow triumph capped off a Saturday doubleheader with BU (2-2, 1-1 PacWest) splitting the day with the Cougars (4-2, 1-1 PacWest), one win apiece.

Raylene Roybal controlled the game from the circle, offering a complete game effort. The freshman was dominant in her second win of the season, posting her first career shutout.

The righty hurler cruised through the middle portion of the game, holding the Cougars hitless and allowing just one base runner from the third inning through the fifth. Roybal finished off the contest with a perfect four-pitch seventh frame.

"Raylene kept us in the ballgame today," said head coach Nikki Udria. "I'm really excited because everytime she steps in there she gets better and better."

Ruth Munoz added to the defensive effort with an incredible play in the top of the sixth. The shortstop made a diving stop on a ground ball and managed to make the play at third base for Kaitlyn Hawkins to make the tag on the lead runner. The gem marked the second out of the inning and eliminated a runner from scoring position.

BU's winning run came at the beginning of the contest with Jennifer Morinishi crossing home plate. Hitting from the second spot in the lineup, Morinishi sparked the offense with a single to left field. Allie Beck reached base by way of an APU error, putting runners on first and second with one out. Kayla Neff followed with a four-pitch walk to load the bases. A flyout from BU initially did not move the runners but Morinishi made her move to home as the right fielder threw the ball into first base. The sophomore scored the lone run with the ball soaring past the catcher.

Freshman Hawkins logged her first career hit in the Saturday contest, while also drawing her first career start.

Biola softball will continue PacWest play on Thursday in a road doubleheader against Concordia.
