Neff Heroics Win Game One

A Kayla Neff homer gave BU all three of its runs, as Biola defeated CUI in game one.

IRVINE, Calif. --- A low-scoring affair was decided by Biola catcher Kayla Neff, who launched a three-run home run in the fourth frame. Biola went on to overcome No. 9 Concordia, 3-2, in game one of Thursday's doubleheader. 

Down 2-0, the BU Eagles needed a rally to get onto the scoreboard and keep the game close with CUI. Biola found that much needed offensive help in the fourth inning with a pair of bunt singles. Jennifer Morinishi led off with the single back to the pitcher, followed by Abie Nowak with a single to the catcher.

With runners on first and second and no one out, BU catcher, Neff, came to the plate. The senior got a hold of a high fastball, launching the ball over the left field fence. Three RBI from Neff handed Biola a one-run lead with four innings remaining.

In the circle, Paige Austin, had her work cut out for her as the BU squad clung to a narrow advantage halfway through the contest. Austin stepped up with three perfect frames and two strikeouts to maintain the 3-2 Biola lead through the final out.

The righty notched her first win of the 2021 season for BU, pitching all seven innings in game one. Austin gave up just four hits throughout the effort, while compiling five strikeouts.

Neff picked up Biola's first home run of the season in game one. The long ball also marked the 15th of Neff's five-year career for the Eagles.

Madison Blossey was another bright spot in the BU lineup, recording her first multi-hit outing of 2021. The outfielder logged a double and a single in the contest in a 2-3 effort.
