Free Bases Haunt BU

BU bats go silent in the 3-0 loss to PLNU.

March 26, 2021

Box Score SAN DIEGO, Calif. —- Biola's offense couldn't get going to support a much improved start from Larson Kindreich as the Eagles dropped the scheduled seven-inning game 3-0. BU will have a chance at redemption on Saturday at Eagles Diamond.

What looked to be a pitchers duel through five, ended up in too many missed opportunities for BU. "We gave up too many free bases today and didn't have the best approach with two strikes at the plate," said Head Coach Jeff Calhoon. "We have the chance to get back to work tomorrow and snag a game or two from PLNU."

Starting pitcher Larson Kindreich bounced back from a rough first outing and gave the Eagles a better shot to compete than in his last outing. Kindreich only allowed one run to come across while striking out six in five innings of work with 100 pitches. The 6'4 lefty allowed a double in the first inning and limited PLU to 2 hits through his five innings.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, calls that could've gone either way loaded the bases for PLNU. With the bases loaded and noowhere to put the batter at the plate, Kindreich faced Evan Waterman and issued the walk to bring home a run for the Sea Lions giving PLNU the 1-0 lead.

BU's best chance to score came in the top of the sixth with runners on first and second and one out. Johnny Sage blasted a ball out to left center that was blown down by the ocean breeze for the out.

Calhoon called on his pen for the bottom of the sixth. Unlike game one, the pen was a bit shaky giving up two runs in the inning to give PLNU a 3-0 lead.

In their final three at bats in the top of the seventh, the first two Eagles struck out. Brandon Cody reached on a single but was caught stealing second to end the game.

Biola is back in action at Eagles Diamond on Saturday as they host Point Loma for another doubleheader. For updates check athletics.biola.edu
