Biola takes down Concordia in five

March 24, 2021

Box Score IRVINE, Calif. --- On Wednesday evening Biola Volleyball earned its first PacWest win of the 2021 season, taking down Concordia University Irvine 3-2.  Multiple players recorded double digit stats on both the offense and defense.

On the attack, The Eagles totaled 50 kills with Madison Beebee (13), Dominique Kirton (11) and Dani Bryant (10) leading the team. Sami Hover was dominant in the back row with 28 digs while Brandee Markwith added 19 of her own.

Marissa Price and Mary McDonnell also reached double digits in digs with 13 a piece for the Eagles. Price completed the double-double by tallying 17 assists on the night while Vanessa Garcia closely followed with 14.

Middle blockers Dani Bryant and Abigail Copeland were solid at the net recording 4 blocks each in the Biola victory.

While every win is a good win, Head Coach Aaron Seltzer is proud of what he saw from his team tonight. "It took everyone out there to win tonight," said Seltzer. "We got a lot of people involved and it was great to see how hungry this team was for the win."

Biola fought for every one of their points tonight inside Golden Gymnasium. After falling in set one 25-20, BU would come back to take the next two sets with scores of 27-25 and 25-20.

The fourth set was back-and-forth the first seven points on both sides of the net. Up 8-7, CUI would go on a seven-point run to make the score 15-7 before BU responded with a six-point run of their own cutting the deficit to 15-13. Concordia was able to edge the set from Biola with a final score of 25-18, the largest victory for either team.

Biola secured the first two points of the deciding set before Concordia drew even 2-2. The set was back-and-forth through the first five points before BU took the lead 10-6. With BU only five points away from a victory, CUI trimmed the Eagle's lead to 12-11. Biola shut the door with three straight points on an attack error by CUI as well as a kill and an ace from freshman Mary McDonnell.

With the win, Biola improves to 1-2 on the season and evens their record 1-1 in PacWest play. The Eagles return to action on March 31 as they host No. 28 Azusa Pacific for the Cornerstone Cup.
