Eagles Steal Game Two Over San Diego

BU softball split the day with San Diego and took game two with a game-winning run in the seventh.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Biola split a doubleheader for the fifth time this season, dropping game one and nabbing game two against NCAA Division I San Diego.

Wednesday's doubleheader came to a close with a bang, as the seventh inning began with the score knotted at two runs apiece. Jennifer Morinishi represented the potential go-ahead run with a single with one out.

Base running proved crucial for the Eagles, as Morinishi moved into scoring position on errant USD pitches. Two wild pitches advanced the sophomore from first to third with Kylie Velasco at the plate. Velasco grounded the ball to the shortstop, giving Morinishi just enough time to slide in and score the game-winning run for a 3-2 BU triumph.

Morinishi stepped up for BU's second run of the game as well, bringing home Madison Blossey in the top of the fifth. The Biola score evened the contest at two runs, leading to the clutch finish for the Eagles.

Biola logged its first run in the second frame, utilizing a lead off hit from Kayla Neff. Maddie Riley pinch ran for the catcher and showed her speed, reaching third on a sacrifice bunt by Brie Nowak. Abie Nowak recorded the RBI for BU, as USD failed to tag out Riley on a play at the plate.

Raylene Roybal carried the torch in the circle and displayed complete composure. The freshman notched the complete game victory, giving up one earned run and striking out two batters. Roybal bounced back from two early runs, never allowing more than one runner per inning through the final five frames.

Game one was a defensive battle between the Eagles and the Toreros with a 4-0 final score in favor of San Diego. The contest hung in balance for the majority of the contest, as the two teams were separated by one run for five and a half innings.

Despite the loss, Paige Austin put together a good outing in the circle, netting seven strikeouts through six frames. Austin allowed just one earned run in the contest, improving her season earned-run average to 1.98.

The Eagles (5-7) will return to action on Friday in a home doubleheader against Dominican beginning at 4:00 pm.
