Eagles Drop Game One

A big third inning helps Azusa Pacific defeat Biola, 9-4, in game one of a Tuesday doubleheader.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola hosted Azusa Pacific for a sunny Tuesday afternoon doubleheader with game one finishing in favor of the Cougars. The visitors compiled six runs in the third, leading to a 9-4 win for APU.

Azusa Pacific started strong at the plate, opening up a two-run lead in the top of the first. A two-out rally with a single and triple brought home the pair of runners for APU.

The Eagles responded in the bottom of the second frame, cutting their deficit in half. Sicili Brittingham led off with a single, before moving to second with a sacrifice bunt by Abie Nowak. Fresh off a walkoff hit against CUI on Saturday, Rilee Ruvalcaba continued her standout play with an RBI double to deep left center.

With the game teetering at 2-1, the Cougars took control in the third. The first five batters reached base and APU showed its power with a three-run homer.

Biola would not go away quietly though, scoring a run three-straight innings. Following the second inning run from Brittingham, Jennifer Morinishi started a rally in the third frame. The lefty singled along with Kylie Velasco to place runners on first and second. Nowak poked a hard grounder through the left side of the infield to score Morinishi for BU's second run of the game.

The BU bats continued to fight in the fourth, taking advantage of APU mistakes. The Eagles loaded the bases, utilizing an error, walk and single to threaten on offense. Velasco brought home Haley Martinez with a groundout to shortstop and Ruth Munoz scored with good baserunning, touching home on a wild pitch.

Two runs in the fourth brought the Eagles back into the game, down 8-4 with three innings remaining. The Cougars stiffened their defense and maintained control for the 9-4 win.

Kylee Messmer offered a great outing in relief, slowing the hot Cougar offense. The righty logged 4.2 innings in the circle, giving up four hits and just one run.

BU's leading hitter, Morinishi, collected her third multi-hit effort of 2021, while extending her hitting streak to three games. Ruvalcaba notched her best performance of the season, going two-for-four at the plate with a double and a RBI.
