APU Tops Biola

The Cougars complete the sweep on Tuesday, nabbing game two over BU by a score of 8-2.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Tuesday's doubleheader between Biola (4-6, 3-5 PacWest) and Azusa Pacific (8-2, 3-1 PacWest) came to a close with the visiting Cougars sweeping the day. APU came out on top of game two, defeating the Eagles, 8-2.

Once again, Azusa Pacific took advantage in its first opportunity at the plate, tallying three runs in the top of the first. The visitors were successful in the opening frame throughout the day, totaling five runs in the first inning between the two games.

The BU lineup was disciplined at the plate, drawing two walks to start the bottom of the first. Kylie Velasco advanced both runners with a sacrifice bunt, giving BU two runners in scoring position with one out. Kayla Neff scored Ruth Munoz with a ground out, slimming the deficit to 3-1.

Neff was the bright spot in the BU offense, going two-for-three at the dish with a triple. The senior played a role in both Biola runs with an RBI and a run scored.

Kylee Messmer stepped in the circle and found quick success with three scoreless frames. From the second through fourth inning, Messmer shut down APU, holding them to one hit and two total base runners.

Through the final three frames, APU broke open the game by tacking on five runs. The flurry of offense opened up an 8-1 APU lead, heading into the bottom of the seventh.

BU catcher, Neff, began the seventh with a triple for the Eagles. With the third triple of her career, Neff set up Abie Nowak for a sacrifice fly to deep center, making the final score 8-2.

Alexis Lara notched her first collegiate base hit for Biola on Tuesday. The freshman lined the ball to center field on a 2-2 count in the third inning.

Biola will look to return to the winning column on Wednesday in a road doubleheader against San Diego.
