Biola Walks Off Against No. 9 CUI

Ruvalcaba launched a walkoff double to defeat #9 Concordia in the eighth inning of game two.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- A Saturday afternoon at Freedom Field finished with late game heroics from Rilee Ruvalcaba, who hit the walkoff double to win game two by a 3-2 final margin. On the day, Biola and No. 9 Concordia split the doubleheader with CUI nabbing game one, 6-0, and BU taking game two, 3-2.

Game two needed extra innings, as the two squads were knotted at 2 runs apiece after the seventh frame. BU pitcher, Paige Austin, posted three quick outs in the top of the eighth, giving the hosting Eagles an opportunity to win it with just one run.

Down 0-2 in the count, Madison Riley poked a shot by the first baseman and down the right field line for a double. The extra-base hit put the game-winning runner on second with Ruvalcaba coming to the plate.

The freshman drove the fourth pitch of the at bat to left center and down right in front of the diving center fielder. Riley was aiming to score from second from the crack of the bat and touched home with ease. Ruvalcaba picked a great time for her first RBI of the season, pushing BU past CUI, 3-2.

The clutch performance came in a comeback effort, as the Concordia Eagles impacted the scoreboard first with two runs in the fourth. The visitors rallied with two outs, logging three-straight hits to create a 2-0 lead.

Riley played a part in the first run for Biola as well as the last, bringing home Allie Beck with an RBI single. Beck pinch ran for Kiana Meriales, who started the effort with a double. Pinch runner, Beck, showed her discipline on the base paths, stealing third on a sleeping CUI defense.

In the bottom of the sixth frame, BU took advantage of a leadoff walk by Kayla Neff. Madison Blossey moved pinch runner Alexis Lara to second with a sacrifice bunt. Meriales came to the dish with two outs and provided the game-tying hit, scoring Lara to tie the game, 2-2.

Paige Austin notched her second win of the season, dealing an eight-inning complete game. The righty posted 12 strikeouts in the contest, surpassing 10 whiffs for the seventh time in her career.

In game one of the doubleheader, CUI utilized persistent offense to take down Biola. Concordia compiled eight hits and five walks to record six runs in the contest.

The BU lineup was active on the base paths early in the game but was unable to cash in. In the first and second innings, Biola loaded the bases, threatening to score. After failing to bring a runner home, the BU Eagles struggled to restart the offense, as they failed to reach third base for the rest of the competition.

Ruth Munoz put together a strong showing throughout the day, going two-for-four in both contests. The junior collected four hits and a double from the leadoff spot for BU.

Biola will hit the road for its next matchup, taking on Azusa Pacific in a doubleheader on Tuesday.
