Biola Lands Narrow Victory Over Knights

The Eagles took down Academy of Art, 4-3, in a nail-biter on the road.

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. - Lilly McNeill came through with a clutch singles win in the last match of the day, giving the Biola women's tennis squad a 4-3 victory over Academy of Art (1-3). BU improved to a 4-2 overall mark on the season, while posting its second-straight victory on the road.

With the Eagles and the Knights knotted at three apiece, McNeill and Erica Hellbe battled for the deciding point of the contest. BU freshman, McNeill, struck first with a 6-4 win in set number one, before Hellbe responded with a 6-4 triumph in the second set. The third and final set came down to a tiebreaker, as McNeill secured the win for Biola with seven rallies to Hellbe's five.

"We fought hard throughout and I couldn't be more proud," remarked head coach David Goodman, "Lilly really impressed with her poise in the clutch moments. She stepped up big-time."

McNeill notched her fourth singles win with the clutch performance, competing from the No. 4 spot. The freshman also helped the Eagles earn the doubles point, teaming up with Brooke Fager for a 6-2 triumph.

All three doubles matches fell the way of Biola, giving the visiting Eagles the first point of the competition.

Academy of Art bounced back with the first win of the singles matches, as Maria Casucci overcame Fager in straight-sets. BU quickly retook the lead with Ines Diaz taking set number one, 7-5, before winning by opponent retirement. Mary Brascia added to Biola's advantage out of the No. 5 spot, decisively defeating Aitana Comas Adam in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).

Back-to-back singles victories for ART U evened the contest, allowing for McNeill's heroics to seal the win for Biola.

Biola Women's Tennis will return to action on Tuesday against another PacWest opponent, Dominican, in San Rafael, Calif., beginning at 12:00 p.m.
