Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Searching For A Score

Biola held without a goal in a physical battle at Point Loma, fall 2-0.

SAN DIEGO, Calif. --- Biola Men's Soccer got out to an early start to its 2021 PacWest Conference season with an 11 a.m. kick-off down in San Diego against the hungry Point Loma Sea Lions.

The Eagles had a tune-up for this one with an exhibition last week, but PLNU came into this seeing its first game action since November 2019. Both teams were timid out of the gate, feeling each other out in a slow-building scoreless first half. The Sea Lions lept out of the gate in half two, though, using a pair of second-frame tallies to win this one 2-0.

After spending pretty much all 90 minutes in the midfield during its exhibition against Westmont last week, Biola finally broke through and got the ball forward once during the first half as last year's leading scorer Jack MacDonald recorded the team's first shot-on-goal of the season 12 minutes into this one.

Unfortunately for the Eagles, the remaining 33 minutes of that first half saw no more shots for the Eagles as the defensive vigor lifted on both sides of the pitch.

Point Loma had two chances when they had a flurry of shot attempts, once between the 17th and 18th minute and again right around the 40-minute mark but JD Gunn, seeing his first game action of the year, turned aside all efforts with three first-half saves.

The two sides combined for just three shots over the final 27 minutes of the half, but racked up four bookings in that time as the trademark PacWest Men's Soccer intensity began to shine through.

The teams went into the break with nothing to show on the scoreboard, but 45 enjoyable minutes from both sides.

PLNU made things a bit less enjoyable almost immediately after coming out for the second half. They converted on a header opportunity off a deflection from point blank range in the 50th minute to pull out in front. Hunter Loomis, a returning six-goal scorer and All-PacWest selection, is the one who converted the first PacWest goal of 2021.

The Sea Lions did not let up after earning the lead, they maintained pressure up top, grinding down the Eagles' defense with five shots over the next 20 minutes, ultimately finding an insurance score to double the lead on that fifth attempt.

The second score came off the foot of Parker Scalzo, a Sea Lion who had the Eagles working all day long, leading his team with five shot attempts. Those five shots is one more than what Biola was able to work out for the entire match in another contest where it was difficult for BU to find space and make plays up top.

Point Loma was relentless in all areas of the field. They finished with a staggering 18 shots and added nine corner kick chances while also getting whistled for 10 more fouls than Biola (21).

The Eagles would have wished for some more dangerous set piece opportunities, only seeing two corner kick chances in this one and only seeing one of their 21 free kicks turn into an immediate shot opportunity.

The loss brings Biola to 0-1-0 (0-1-0 PacWest) on the season. The Sea Lions improve to 1-0-0 (1-0-0 Pacwest).

Next up for the Eagles is three home matches in a row, beginning Feb. 10 when BU hosts Concordia Irvine (0-0-0, 0-0-0 PacWest). Watch that game for free live on the Biola Athletics YouTube.
