Eagles Take Battle of the Birds

The Eagles defeated the Penguins on Saturday, as Malik Shaheed landed the game-winner.

LA MIRADA --- A back-and-forth second half created an electric night at Al Barbour Field. The Saturday bout between Biola and Dominican was decided by an absolute stunner from Malik Shaheed, giving BU a 2-1 victory.

The Eagles were in control throughout the first half but could not find the back of the net. In their third-straight home contest, BU tallied 12 shots in the opening 45 minutes. Five shots came in on-target and forced a DUC save, while another shot narrowly missed off the left post.

Adam Jones and Theo Le Calve consistently led the attack with each player logging four shots. The aggressive play from Le Calve created the first goal for the Eagles, following the halftime break.

Daniel Simonis set up the play for Le Calve with a pass to the left side of the box. Le Calve took a few touches towards the end line before beating the keeper for a 1-0 BU lead. The left-footed talent notched his fourth goal of the season with the 46th minute score.

The visitors battled back, turning up the urgency on offense. The Penguins' all-out attack paid off in the 72nd minute, earning a free kick from 35 yards out. The ensuing kick was curled into the box and headed in by Eddie Silverbush, knotting the match at 1-1.

Before Dominican could catch its breath from celebrating their equalizer, Biola retook the lead. Less than 30 seconds after the DUC score, the Eagles logged an incredible goal in response.

The tally came in from Shaheed, who lasered a shot with his left foot right underneath the crossbar. The long distance score stunned the Penguins, as Shaheed found his second goal of 2021.

A now frantic attack from Dominican could not get past the BU keeper, JD Gunn, who compiled four saves in the contest. 18 scoreless minutes went by as the Eagles clung to their 2-1 lead that would hold until full time.

On the night, Biola outshot the visitors, 18-16, while totaling eight shots on-goal.

Simonis and Aidan Hill dished out assists on Saturday. The two Eagles sit at the top of the team leaderboard with three assists on the season, matching the season totals from Jones, Le Calve and Lawrence Kwazema.

Biola will look for a PacWest crown next Saturday at 7:00 pm, needing a win over Azusa Pacific to accomplish the feat.
