BU Drops Thriller to No. 10 APU

The visiting Cougars needed overtime to take down Biola in a nail-biter on Saturday.

LA MIRADA --- The Eagles hosted Senior night on Saturday, honoring nine student-athletes in their final match at Al Barbour Field. In the contest, BU (11-6-0, 7-3-0 PW) battled it out with the 10th-ranked Azusa Pacific Cougars (12-2-2, 8-1-1 PW) with the 2021 PacWest crown on the line.

The visitors came out on top, despite a thrilling back and forth affair. APU found the decisive edge in the first minute of overtime, landing a header for a 3-2 final score.

Fouls influenced regulation, leading to all four goals. BU and APU each tacked on two scores in the opening 90 minutes off of set piece opportunities.

A penalty kick from Theo Le Calve was the opening score of the competition. Adam Jones earned the chance for BU, drawing a foul inside the box. Le Calve delivered on the penalty try, going right with the ball, while the goalie dove left.

In the 22nd minute, APU corralled its own penalty kick. The visitors were aggressive off the rebound from their shot and drew contact from the Biola defense. The Cougars converted on their penalty kick for a 1-1 scoreline.

The match remained knotted at one through the halftime break. The tide turned once again in the 66th minute with a free kick for the Cougars right outside the box. Diep tallied his second goal with a curling shot over the BU wall.

Just over three minutes later, a free kick for the Eagles put the host squad in an advantageous position. The Cougars stopped at nothing to thwart the attack and ended up fouling Lawrence Kwazema in the box. The ensuing penalty kick found the back of the net, once again, off the left foot of Le Calve.

The midfielder recorded his sixth goal of the season for the equalizer in the 69th minute. The two goals on Saturday night was the first multi-goal match for Le Calve in a Biola uniform.

A blunder in the APU defense allowed a great chance for the BU offense in the 80th minute. Jones looked for the game-winner in a one-on-one with the goalie but put the shot just left of the goal. Despite the opportunities, neither team could break the tie, forcing overtime.

Prior to Saturday's match, the team celebrated nine seniors for the men's soccer program, Luis Rodriguez, Lawrence Kwazema, Ruben Neubauer, Jonathan Serrano, Henry Reeves, Daniel Simonis, Pontus Gitselov, Gabriel Berthoud and Malik Shaheed. The group of Eagles helped the team to a 28-24-5 overall record and an 18-9-3 mark at Al Barbour Field through the last four years.

The BU squad will now wait for the NCAA DII West Regional Selection Show to see if they will make the regional championships. The selection show is set for Monday at 3:30 pm PST.
