LOS ANGELES, Calif. --- Biola got off to another hot start during the prelim session at day two of the La Verne Collegiate Winter Invite.

The men's 100-breaststroke was the standout effort on the afternoon as Jacob Haaksma completed the event in third (:57.71) and was joined by two other teammates moving on as part of the top-8. Noah Benson (:58.83) finished fifth and Nathan Schwantes eighth (:59.52). It was the only event on the day to see three Eagles make it in the 'A' group. James Gamette and Gavin Kelley both also pushed through to consolation finals.

The men also saw multiple members of the squad pass on to the 'A' heat earlier in the afternoon during the 100-butterfly. It was Tanner Smith (:51.40) leading that bunch with a seventh-place finish. Dylan Pon was just an eyelash behind him at :51.81, which was good for eighth. Gabe Weber got a chance to show off his butterfly and made it through to a consolation final with a 20th-place finish (:53.79).

Grace Kling had the highest individual performance in the prelim session. She placed second with a 1:04.78. Anna Haaksma also advanced for BU in that event.

Ryan Monrean added a third-place individual mark in the men's 100-back (:53.34). He will be one to watch in the evening. Clayton Owens also finished inside the top-10 (10th - :54.70).

Kolya Vos matched that with a third-place finish in the 100-back. She turned a :57.79 and is close enough for a chance to win in the final. Liza Parahnevich will also be in the 'A' final after placing seventh with a :58.96.

The men's 400-IM was a fun one to watch for Eagles fans with three Eagles finishing back-to-back-to-back at eighth, ninth and 10th. The running order was Patrick Waggoner (4:15.66), Gavin Souttere (4:15.69) and Donatus Onu (4:15.71).

On the women's side it was more challenging to break into the top-8 and earn a spot in the 'A' finals on a day where their fields were much deeper. Morgan Kampfer finished one spot shy of the 'A' group with a 9th-place effort in the 100-butterfly (:58.21). Liza Parahnevich (13th - :58.80) and Anna Cohee (23rd - 1:00.00) each also advanced.

Sofia Chavez-Varela was also right on the precipice of a shot at the 'A' final. She finished 10th in the women's 200-freestyle with a time of 1:56.29. Kasidee Pascoe continued her strong meet by placing just behind Chavez-Varela in 13th (1:56.75). Both will be featured in the 'B' final tonight. 

The men had a strong showing in the 200-free also, led by senior Westin Dawe. Dawe will be featured in the top group this evening as his 1:44.61 was good enough to land him in eighth. Weber added an Eagle to the top-10 with a 10th-place finish and time of 1:44.83. Ethan Crabb also made finals by finishing 18th with a 1:47.26.

The women's 400-IM was one of the better volume events for the Eagles as four women make it through to finals (Vermeulen, Harper, Griffin, Mudd).
