Experience Gained

The Biola men’s soccer squad got its first taste of NCAA postseason play in an opening round match on Friday.

WICHITA FALLS, Texas --- The Eagles (11-7-0) saw their first 90 minutes of NCAA National Tournament action on Friday, as they battled seventh-seeded Cal Poly Pomona
(13-4-3) at Midwestern State in Wichita Falls, Texas. The result was not what tenth-seeded Biola was hoping for, as the team fell, 5-0, to the Broncos.

"I'm really proud of our guys' response today, not to be angry with each other and not to get upset but to continue to support each other," commented head coach Joey O'Keefe. "I'm proud of our team for their effort."

Injuries struck the Eagles early in the Friday afternoon contest. A pair of First Team All-PacWest selections in Lawrence Kwazema and Theo Le Calve exited in the first 10 minutes, opening the door for a CPP push. Kwazema was able to return to the pitch after the halftime break.

Cal Poly Pomona took advantage of its opportunities in the 20th minute with a score to the back post. A penalty kick less than a minute later would add to the CPP lead.

The 2-0 Bronco lead would hold through til the halftime hiatus. BU did its best to hold off the CPP attack, which logged nine shots and six on-goal. JD Gunn was at the receiving end of four shots for four saves.

The momentum remained with the Broncos in the second 45 minutes of action, as they tallied another three goals. Two quick scores and a third in the 46th minute created the insurmountable 5-0 lead.

Biola collected eight shots on Friday with one landing on-target. Third Team All-PacWest Daniel Simonis launched a pair of shots from his forward position. Moose Bonat provided energy off the bench, adding multiple shots, as well.

The loss ends the Biola postseason run and the team's 2021 campaign, following a strong showing of 11 wins and seven PacWest triumphs. "I think we all can hold our heads high even after the result. I think we can learn from this and carry it into next year and do something even greater," said Izaac Zausch.

The BU squad will graduate nine student-athletes, including Luis Rodriguez, Lawrence Kwazema, Ruben Neubauer, Jonathan Serrano, Pontus Gitselov, Henry Reeves, Daniel Simonis, Malik Shaheed and Gabriel Berthoud.
