BU, APU Draw on Senior Day

A wild match with six goals combined resulted in a tie between BU and APU, as the Eagles celebrated their three seniors.

LA MIRADA --- A beautiful late afternoon made the perfect backdrop for an electric women's soccer match. The Biola Eagles played host to the visiting Azusa Pacific Cougars on Saturday in their final match of the 2021 season. The back and forth affair saw three goals from each side, as the two teams tied, following 110 minutes of soccer.

A scoreless battle carried through the opening 23 minutes of the contest. The visitors broke that silence with a score off the right foot of Maddy Morrison.

The Eagles responded with pressure that created an opportunity for Jazmin Montalvo. The freshman dispossessed a Cougar defender inside their own box and casually sent the ball to the back of the net for an easy score. Montalvo notched her team-best sixth goal of the season, thanks to a lackluster play from APU.

Exactly a minute later, Biola mounted an offensive attack that gave the host squad its first lead of the day. Sarah Freed opened up the play with plenty of space in the midfield. The forward then beat a defender and placed a perfect through ball to the feet of a sprinting Abby Chavez. Chavez blazed by the backline of the Cougars and slid the ball past the goalie for a 2-1 BU lead.

Before the first half could come to a close, APU struck an equalizer for a 2-2 tie.

Coming out of halftime, Biola did not waste time, tallying its third goal in the 47th minute. Katelyn Penner passed the ball up the right side to Christine Maranville, who delivered a fantastic cross to the center of the box. Freed was the one on the run, connecting on the header for a 3-2 BU edge.

Once again, the separation would not last. The Cougars found the back of the net one more time, tying the contest in the 61st minute.

Despite the struggle, neither team could break the 3-3 tie. The two teams went scoreless for 50 minutes, leading to the draw.

Chavez put together a great performance on Saturday, creating opportunities for Biola with her speed. The BU forward was constantly forcing the APU defense backwards and even came up with a great chance for a game-winner with eight minutes left in regulation but was stopped by the opposing goalie.

Prior to Saturday's match, Biola honored its three seniors, Lindsay Gerle, Briana Ruelas and Ell Tinsley. The trio has helped the Eagles to a 27-22-8 overall record and a 17-6-5 mark at Al Barbour Field, during their four years here in La Mirada.
