FRESNO, Calif. ---  After a successful spring, Biola Tennis picked up right where it left off as the Eagles fared well at the West Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Regional Championships this past weekend hosted at Fresno State. 

The ITA West Regional Championships are an opportunity for the top players from each University in the West Region to compete against one another. Featured in the tournament were 64 men's and women's singles as well as 32 doubles teams.

The tournament is played out in single elimination format until the championship is determined with the winners going onto compete in the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia. The eight regional winners advanving onto ITA Regionals make up the best of the best tennis players in NCAA Division II. 

Biola was well represented at the tournament, but a trio of Eagles were able to make a loud statement in Fresno, Caifornia "Both our teams did amazingly well and couldn't be more proud," said Head Coach David Goodman. 

After a first round bye, the women's doubles team of Mary Brascia and Colbeyshae Emery went onto win four straight matches, earning a spot in the doubles finals. The pair would fall in the doubles final with a score of 8-6 to ART U's Sofia Ragona and Yun "Nicole"Shaiu who will be advancing to the ITA Cup. 

"As a doubles team we had such a good run last year," said Mary Brascia "We wanted to continue that and we did a good job of that this past weekend."

Emery would go on to compete in singles where she had another first round bye. The sophomore won four-straight to secure a spot in the finals round against Lunn University's Elenora Liga. Although Liga would take the match from Emery (6-4, 6-1) Biola Tennis has something to be excited about for the upcoming season. 

"I had a really good run and faced a very tough opponent in the finals," said Emery. "But moving forward I think it gives us a little glimpse of what to expect for the season. It gives us a lot of confidence."

Sebastian Herrerra, who entered the tournament unseeded, won six matches in-a-row on his way to the tournament title. Herrerra stunned Point Loma's Tyler Davis, the number one seed entering the tournament, in the second round (6-0, 6-1). Herrera continued to elevate his play as the rounds progressed and took down fellow Eagle Andres Meneses in the third round (6-3, 6-3).

In the finals, Hererra beat Azusa Pacific's Ryan Nuno (6-2, 2-6, 10-8) to punch his ticket to the ITA Cup in Rome, Georgia. 

"No one really expected me to go this far since I wasn't seeded, so that was cool," said Herrerra. "Going in there as an underdog and winning the whole thing was really special." 

Herrerra will return to the court as he prepares for the ITA Cup hosted at Berry College in Rome, Georgia beginning October 14.
