Tides Turn In San Diego

The 5-2 win over Point Loma in San Diego is the first victory Biola Men’s Tennis has recorded against the Sea Lions.

SAN DIEGO --- The Biola Eagles had faced the Point Loma Sea Lions 16 times since men's tennis was rekindled as a varsity sport at Biola in 2007. Several battles have been close, particularly over the past few years since Head Coach David Goodman's group joined the PacWest. But the Eagles had never quite gotten enough traction to upset PLNU. Until Monday.

Biola Men's Tennis controlled doubles play and made it impossible for the Sea Lions to mount a comeback in singles, winning 5-2 to improve to 6-3 on the season while breaking its 16 match losing streak against Point Loma.

The Eagles' doubles teams remained consistent as ever to take the opening point. A quick win on court three from Derek James and Quentin Lau, which was their fifth victory in a row as a duo, gave the Eagles two chances late in the set on courts one and two.

Logan Blair and Andres Meneses played their match to 5-5 before being clipped by the home team's doubles' specialist tandem. But Alexei Prokopchuk and Edwyn Ramos came on shortly after to hold onto their break and win 6-4 at line No. 1.

The momentum created by earning the doubles point was definitely evident in singles for BU. Edwyn Ramos nearly double-bageled his opponent as he dictated play on court four to the end of a 6-0, 6-1 win. Then Derek James followed up shortly thereafter with a 6-3, 6-0 win to earn Biola's third point of the afternoon while James improved his record against PLNU's Tim Soderman to 4-0 in the last two years.

The match's clinch still needed some time after the Eagles' one-two punch though. Prokopchuk and Blair had both taken the first set against their respective opponents. But they were pushed to third sets just as Meneses and Lau went to a deciding set after winning the second stanza of their matches.

Even with third sets evening the playing field, allowing the Eagles four chances at a clincher was simply too much for Point Loma to overcome. Meneses, who actually clinched the match, and Prokopchuk both won their third sets with multiple breaks in hand and Biola won its second match of the year over a PacWest opponent.

The Eagles will stay in San Diego to play again on Tuesday. They have a morning match scheduled against UC San Diego, which narrowly beat Biola 4-3 at the Biola Tennis Center earlier this year.
