LA MIRADA, Calif. ---  No. 8 Biola Baseball's history with Point Loma is one of the key storylines headed into this weekend's four game series between the teams, and that's not only because Head Coach Jeff Calhoon was part of the Sea Lions's staff a year ago. These games point back to the very foundation of the Eagles' program, as Point Loma was the first opponent Biola Baseball ever faced and Friday's series-opener will be the beginning of the seventh decade of competition between the teams. 

And it has certainly been a genuine rivalry over the past 60 years. Point Loma leads the all-time series 99-to-91, but Biola has a 39-30 record against the Sea Lions over the past 20 years and a 21-12 record at Eagles Diamond in that span.

This year's team is also coming off a 3-1 roadtrip to Hawaii that the Eagles believe they should have swept. As a team, the Eagles posted a .411 on-base percentage in four games to go along with 13 extra-base hits and 14 stolen bases in 15 attempts. The offense also drove in 21 runs while Hawaii Hilo and Hawaii Pacific combined for seven RBI's during the Biola Boys' roadtrip. Ryan Gallegos ended the week as the PacWests' leader in slugging percentage and on-base percentage after hitting three homeruns and reaching safely 11 times. Jacob Portaro got hot again, leading the team with four extra-base hits, and Ben Smith went 4-for-4 in stolen base opportunities to move into a tie for the team lead in that category. 

Larson Kindreich led that pitching staff that only allowed seven RBI's with 13 strikeouts in 10 innings of work. But the rest of the pitchers were right there with him to accumulate a total of 34 strikeouts in 31.2 innings. Joey Leavitt struckout the side in both his innings at Hawaii Pacific and redshirt freshman Andrew Beauvais posted a .133 batting average against alongside a 0.00 ERA in 4.2 IP.

After having some offensive struggles at the start of the season, the Sea Lions have started to pound the ball of late and have started their PacWest season with a 3-1 record after hosting Holy Names last week. Point Loma has recorded 10 hits or more in six of its last seven game, including the last five in a row, to put their overall record back over .500. Newcomer to the roster Baxter Halligan has also recorded multi-hit games in four of the past five contests to raise his average to .364. And Point Loma also has three other regular starters who are hitting .300 or better on the year. But Biola may be able to take advantage of a few trends listed in PLNU's box scores that will help the Eagles get on the winning end of things.

Even with all the hits over the past seven games, the Sea Lions have recorded two or fewer extra-base hits in five of those contests and have scored seven runs or more only three times this season. That means the Eagles will probably be content with scattering a few singles throughout the series as long as the hits don't add up and create long innings because Biola has the offense to keep up: Coach Calhoons group has scored six runs or more six times this season and is undefeated in those games. And speaking of the Eagles' offense, Point Loma's good hitting has covered for a pitching staff that surrendered 21 walks in the Holy Names series, including two games with eight free passes. But free trips to first base has just meant the Eagles created chaos in Hawaii. Biola won all three games it got more than five free passes in and combined for 14 stolen bases in those games. 

That said, the Eagles will need to be prepared for the power arms in the Sea Lions' rotation. Ace Zack Noll has 34 strikeouts and just 12 walks in 24.2 innings while Sterling Strong is pitching to a 2.66 ERA in 23.2 innings with 23 strikeouts and just eight walks.  

Lastly, occasional rain is forecasted to hit La Mirada on Friday and Saturday as of this release. But the games are still scheduled to proceed at their normal start times until further notice. Any changes will be published to athletics.biola.edu
