LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Now that the conference awards have been handed out for opening weekend and Point Loma's has officially started week No. 2 for the PacWest, it's time for Biola Baseball to turn its attention away from the excitement of the series sweep over Cal State Monterey Bay.Â
One of the marks of great teams is their ability to harness momentum from big accomplishments and channel it into the next challenge and the Eagles will have an opportunity to practice that this week against another CCAA opponent in San Bernardino. With a five games scheduled in a three-day span the following week, Head Coach Jeff Calhoon and staff will be very deliberate with the use of their pitching corps in the home and away singles against the Coyotes so Biola can be setup well going into week three.Â
But as Biola's three wins over the Otters showed, a good offense can go a long way in helping to carry the load for a pitching staff. The Eagles staked their pitchers to the initial lead in the first two games of the series with Cal State Monterey Bay and also scored a bunch of runs in the middle innings of the series finale to hold a lead after six innings in all three games of the series. Being ahead in the game, especially when it's a comfortable lead, with nine outs left to get is an easy way to lighten the load on the bullpen and is certainly a winning formula that the Biola Boys will look to repeat time and again.
Another thing to watch for this week in the Eagles' time at the plate is to see if the lineup can continue to succeed during its second and third look at a starting pitcher. Biola has scored literally half of its 24 runs this season in the fourth inning and scored at least three runs in that frame in each installment of the series sweep. By contrast, the Otters scored an equal number of runs over the first three innings against Biola but were not able to score in the fourth inning against Biola's staff.Â

Cal State San Bernardino split its opening weekend series against Washburn University, a Mid America Intercollegiate Athletics (MIAA) team that was a middle-of-the-road 25-21, 16-17 MIAA a year ago. The Coyotes gave up 26 runs over the four games, including 12 in the first game of the season, while scoring 16 times themselves and recording just four extra-base hits (three doubles and a homerun). CSUSB was picked last in the CCAA Preseason Poll after going 15-33 and 19 games under .500 in conference play a year ago.
Biola Baseball is 2-1 all-time against Cal State San Bernardino and has won the last two meetings, the most recent of which came in 2012. But this 2020 team does have a minor connection to that last win, as two men who played in Biola's alumni game last month provided key hits in the Eagles' 8-5 win. Outfielder Vinnie Fayard hit a two-run homerun in the bottom of the fifth to give Biola 5-4 lead. Then catcher Mike Lopez lined a two-run single to right in the bottom of the seventh inning to give Biola two insurance runs.Â
Please note that Saturday's game at Eagles Diamond was moved up to 1 p.m. from its original time of 2 p.m. This change occurred to ensure sufficient daylight was available to complete all nine innings. Cal State San Bernardino will charge $5 for general admission on Friday and will host the contest at Fiscalini Field (parking is free).Â
