RobertAnthony Cruz and Larson Kindreich earn the first PacWest Player and Pitcher Of The Week awards for the 2020 season.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Baseball was centerstage in the PacWest's success against CCAA opponents over opening weekend. All four PacWest teams who faced CCAA opponents won their series this past weekend, but only Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's squad earned a series sweep. And that came against a Cal State Monterey Bay team that was ranked second in the CCAA preseason poll. 

This early success will hopefully pay dividends come NCAA postseason selection time in the form of three PacWest teams qualifying for the Regional. But for now the Eagles wins have resulted in PacWest Player of the Week and Pitcher of the Week honors for RobertAnthony Cruz and Larson Kindreich.

These are the first conference weekly honors for both men and are mostly due to their outstanding performances in Biola's 9-3 win over the Otters on Opening Day. 

"It's great to see both these guys succeed on opening weekend after all the hard work they've put in," said Head Coach Jeff Calhoon. "Getting a series sweep always takes a team effort and I'm proud the entire team for the competitiveness they showed on the weekend."

Kindreich was tabbed as the PacWest's best pitcher after throwing six shutout innings and striking out eight as Biola's Opening Day starter. He also only surrendered three hits and induced 14 swing-and-misses from opposing hitters while accumulating 16 two-strike counts. 

Cruz wasted no time proving how deserving he was of Preseason All-PacWest honors. The second baseman went 4-for-5 with a two-run homerun, two doubles and two runs scored in game one alone and leads the PacWest with 15 total bases after the first weekend of the season. 

He'll start the two-game set against Cal State San Bernardino with a 1.250 slugging percentage after five of his team-leading six hits went for extra bases (two homeruns, three doubles). 

Biola will play at Cal State San Bernardino on Friday at 6 p.m. before hosting the Coyotes at Eagles Diamond on Saturday at 1 p.m.
