Women’s Basketball Honors Seniors

All four of Biola’s seniors made field goals in Thursday’s senior night against Concordia.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Biola women's basketball program took a time to the contributions seniors Jelissa Puckett, Kayla Macedo, Mikayla Greens and Tatum Brimley made to the team in a ceremony with the ladies' families before Thursday's game against Concordia.

All four of Biola's seniors went onto make field goals in their final home games at Chase Gym, and St. Louis, Missouri-native Puckett swished a three-pointer with 20 seconds left for the Eagles final bucket of the game.

It was just one of those nights where Biola's three-point attempts were rattling in-and-out, and Concordia's Michaela VanderKlugt excelled with a game-high 27 points and 12 rebounds. Head Coach Alan Nakamura's group matched the visiting Eagles in both the first and fourth quarters, but Concordia won the two middle quarters to take a road win in Chase Gym by a score of 59-51.

Biola ends the regular season with an 18-10 record and a 14-9 mark in the PacWest, which will be good enough to play in the 2:45 pm game on March 5, Day One of the PacWest Tournament in Azusa. The Eagles will play one of two possible opponents: Point Loma if the Sea Lions win their final game on Saturday against Holy Names; Fresno Pacific if PLNU loses and FPU wins its final game Saturday.

"Hats off to Concordia, and Michaela VanderKlugt. As usual they played hard, and physical, and hit more big shots, and grabbed more tough rebounds than we did," Head Coach Alan Nakamura said after the game. "But our team is determined and humble. We will learn from this game, bounce back, and look to play our best basketball of the season next week!

"We are also very thankful for our seniors! It is wonderful to see how our players have grown and matured over their time at Biola. And look at the loving support they all have from their families and friends. I look at them and clearly remember getting to know them and their families, and look at them now!"

Both teams came out playing great defense and Biola got a number of big stops in the first quarter as it prevented Concordia from making any of its six attempts from beyond the arc. Tatum Brimley scored four of her six points in the game over the first 10 minutes while Jazz Benn and Mikayla Greens combined for all nine of their team's points in the second quarter on 3-of-7 shooting and 2-for-2 shooting from Greens at the charity stripe.

As an aside, the Eagles had a great game at the free-throw line in their final games before they head to the postseason and need to take all the free points they can get. Greens, Puckett, Madi Chang and Stephanie Lee were all perfect from the line as Biola was 11-for-12 as a team.

All four of Puckett's makes from the stripe came in the second half on her way to a team-best 10 points over the third and fourth quarters. This is the third time Jelissa had led the Eagles in scoring during her two years at Biola, and all three of those games occured during this season.

A three-pointer 30 seconds into the third quarter from Jazz Benn brought Biola within four points. Then a layup from Madi Chang accomplished the same thing with two minutes left in the period. But a good close to the quarter from Concordia widened the gap and helped the away team hold control of the game during the final 10 minutes.

Biola will until Saturday to find out who it will play in the first round on March 5 in Azusa. Look for updates next week at athletics.biola.edu
