Weekly Notes for Baseball February 23 to February 29

A Familiar Challenge

Biola Baseball heads back out to Hawaii to face Hawaii Hilo in non-conference doubleheaders Friday and Saturday.

February 26, 2020

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- It's definitely felt like it's been a few weeks since the No. 12 Biola Eagles ended their imposing five-game week with a perfect 5-0 record at Eagles Diamond. But at the very least, the news coming out of the National College Baseball Writers' Association office sustained the excitement around the program last week. Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's group was ranked No. 2 in the West Region and No. 14 in the NCAA Division II national poll while left-hander Larson Kindreich was named Pitcher of the Week for the entire West Region after striking out 15 UC Colorado Springs hitters in seven shutout innings.

And even without playing a game last week, the Eagles moved up two spots in the national poll this week while staying at No. 2 in the West Region, just five points behind the West's No. 1 UC San Diego

But the Biola Boys will look to downplay the attention as they shift their attention to PacWest opponents and try simply to repeat the approach that led them to so much success over the first 10 games of the season. And you certainly can't blame the team for trying to just put their heads back down and do their jobs. That work ethic helped the entire pitching staff limit Colorado Springs to a total of three runs over the final three games of the four-part sweep of the Cougars, quieting a batting order that went onto score 42 runs in a three-game sweep of Northwest Missouri State this past weekend.

As for Biola's offense, the Eagles will look to depend a little less on the homerun ball headed into the coming week, especially with all the rain in the forecast all weekend in Hilo. RobertAnthony Cruz, Ryan Gallegos and Andy VanAntwerp all hit multiple homeruns two weekends ago but Biola recorded six hits or fewer in four of the five games it played against the Colorado schools. That may change as the Eagles travel to Hilo though, as the Biola Boys have averaged over 10 hits per game in the eight games they've played at Wong Stadium over the past two years.

No. 12 BIOLA (9-1) at Hawaii Hilo (2-4, 0-2 PacWest) on Friday February 28 at 3 p.m. & 6 p.m. (PT) and Saturday February 29 at 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. (PT) // Live Stats \\ Internet capabilities prevent UHH from offering live video
The Vulcans came into the season ranked No. 5 in the PacWest Preseason Poll, receiving just two fewer points that fourth-ranked Biola after finishing second in the conference standings in 2019. Hawaii Hilo went 21-11 a year ago in PacWest play but went 2-6 overall against the Eagles, a mark that may have been a factor in the Vulcans missing out on an NCAA West Regional berth. This year the Vulcans are off to a 2-0 start in conference play, but are on a four-game losing streak as they welcome the Eagles to Wong Stadium on Friday. But the fact that Hawaii Hilo has only been able to play Hawaii Pacific and University of Hawaii-Manoa through the first three weeks of the season creates a mixed bag of pros and cons headed into the rest of their season. One has to anticipate that the Vulcans will still be getting accustomed to the grind and pace of their season when Biola comes to town: they haven't played a countable game since February 9. But the small sample size also makes UH Hilo's roster a bit of an unknown for Head Coach Jeff Calhoon's group as they prepare for the non-conference series.

To date, catcher Jaryn Kanbara is off to a good start this year with nine hits in 20 at-bats. John Bicos leads the team with six RBI's despite only recording four hits because three of those knocks went for extra bases. Kyle Alcorn and Christian Casados have both started twice for the Vulcans, but both men have pitched fewer than nine innings so far this year while allowing four earned runs apiece.

Biola Baseball is 10-3 against Hawaii Hilo all-time and has won six of the last seven road games its played against the Vulcans.
