Breakthrough After Doubles Win

Biola Women’s Tennis rolls to a 4-0 victory after No. 3 doubles comes up with a big win against Hope International.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- The Hope International Royals came to the Biola Tennis Center with a more challenging roster than had faced the Biola Eagles in years past.

The Royals No. 1 doubles team jumped out to a 6-1 win and the No. 3 pair from the visitors held serve the majority of the way through their set. But Allison Torres and Anna Hartmann rallied to win the contest on court three, finally breaking through to break HIU's serve at 5-5 and holding again to win 7-5.

The win was a great showing for the Torres-Hartmann team that hadn't played a match together in over two weeks. The ladies received serve to open the match, so they were forced to keep up with their opponents all the way through the set as Hope International continued to hold serve. But in the end, their fundamental play finally won out, improving their record as a duo to 2-1 on the year.

The win at No. 3 and the resulting doubles point for Biola gave the Eagles a momentum boost that led to a much easier time in singles.

Colbeyshae Emery raced her way to her fifth-straight singles win, breaking her opponent's serve with ease from the start and winning 6-0, 6-2. Senior Lauren Lee completed her personal double by winning her singles match at No. 3 two and one. It's the second time this season that Lee has won both her doubles and singles matches in a dual, and the first time she recorded the feat with a win at No. 3 singles.

The Lily Waterhouse won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 5 to clinch the match for the Eagles and to take hold of her first official statistics of the season. Waterhouse had played a few unofficial matches at No. 7, including a win at home against Cal State LA last week, but finally recorded the 10th singles win of her career at Biola with this victory against Hope International.

Head Coach David Goodman's group is now on an 11-match win streak against the Royals after Tuesday. The Eagles will return to action this Friday when they host Holy Names at 1 p.m.
