Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

It’s A Clean Sweep

Biola Women’s Tennis wins every doubles and singles decision against the Holy Names Hawks.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Last year's Biola Women's Tennis team qualified for the PacWest Tournament with memorable matches at Biola Tennis Center that went down to the wire. This year's group may have just blasted their way into the conference championship field with Friday's resounding 7-0 win over the visiting Holy Names Hawks.

After dropping two matches to the Hawks in 2019, Head Coach David Goodman's group came out on top at every doubles court and won every singles match in straight sets. That will go a long way in proving that the Eagles are better than at least two other teams in the PacWest, which essentially is the criteria for being among the 12 teams that go to Surprise, Arizona since the conference has 14 women's tennis teams.

But it also continues an impressive stretch the Eagles have been on since winning at Redlands this past Friday. Biola Women's Tennis has now won three matches in a row to even their season record at 5-5 and hasn't dropped a point since Colbeyshae Emery clinched the Redlands match with a tiebreaker win in singles.

BLT finished off doubles in quick succession on courts two and one with 6-4 and 6-3 victories, respectively. It ended up being a great move by Coach Goodman to pair Ines Diaz with Lauren Lee at No. 2 since that tandem clinched the doubles point. That team hadn't played together in over two weeks but still improved to 2-1 on the season with their win.

Lee kept that momentum going into singles, dropping just three games in her 6-1, 6-2 victory to officially clinch the dual match for Biola. That score is beginning to become a bit of a theme for the senior, as all three of her singles matches have come in straight sets while only surrendering three games.

Colbeyshae Emery lost the fewest games (two) and finished mere minutes before Lee. But fellow senior Allison Torres matched Lee's victory with a 6-1, 6-2 score and shook hands within about 30 seconds of Lee to give Biola five points.

Ines Diaz took her game to another gear at the end of both victories in her 6-4, 6-4 win, staying on serve through the first five changeovers of each set before breaking Raia Jagger for her sixth game in each stanza.

Brooke Fager also had a strong rally in her second set to win 6-4 and prevent Holy Names from walking away with a single victory on Friday. After being broken while up 4-3, the Spokane, Washington-native responded with a quick break over her own and served out the match at love for her third singles win of the year.

The fast and straight-forward win will hopefully help the Eagles stay fresh for Saturday's match against another PacWest opponent. Biola Women's Tennis hosts Stanislaus State at 11 a.m.
