Biola Track & Field sees two school records fall on day two of its 2020 season.

February 15, 2020

POMONA, Calif. --- Biola Track & Field saw a more full roster competing during day two of its 2020 season. The Eagles split between the Westmont Sunshine Open & Combined Events and the Pomona-Pitzer Collegiate All-Comers.

Biola saw two school records fall on this day as Corry Williams won his heptathlon and Kendra Sachse won the women's javelin in record-breaking efforts. Sachse smashed the old school mark of 38.81m with a toss of 47.65m. It was a lifetime best for the freshman.

"We were very happy with [Kendra's performance today]," said Head Coach Sean Henning. "Troy Yarter also had a 16-foot personal best in the javelin."

Yarter led the men's effort in that event with a 50.79m toss to finish fourth overall.

Today was the final three events of the men's heptathlon as Corry Williams and Nathaniel Belden competed in the 60m hurdles, pole vault and a nice, brisk 1,000m run.

Williams won the hurdles (:08.69) and took second in the 1,000m run (3:00.48) to hold on to the top spot. He beat Vanguard's competitor by about 300 points. Belden finished fourth with a 3,743. His best finish of the day was a second-place mark in the hurdles (:08.74)

Rebeka Preston and Hannah Hollenbeck both completed the full women's pentathlon on Saturday, with Preston accumulating 3,149 point to place third behind a club competitor and the top athlete for William Jessup. Hollenbeck tied for sixth with 2,780 points.

Preston built her score with top-3 finishes in the hurdles (:09.54), high jump (1.51m), 800m (2:31.20) and long jump (5.12m). Hollenbeck's top finish was fifth-place marks in the shot put (9.19m) and 800m (2:32.76).

Over at Pomona, Biola saw some collegiate-bests set by a few of its returners and got 17 total individual top-10 finishes.

Carissa Kalpakjian was definitely a standout. She took second in the 100m (:12.54) and set a personal-best in the 200m with a :25.47 to finish third overall. Ingrid Neukirchen was right there with Kalpakjian in the 100m, earning a fifth-place finish with a :12.57.

Noah Strenn led Biola's effort in the men's 200m. He finished 16th overall with a heat victory and a new PR of :22.55.

He and Mathias Davis both went in the top-10 in the 400m as well. Strenn placed seventh with a :50.06 while Davis chalked up a :50.46.

"Noah Strenn had a fantastic day in the sprints," said Henning.

Jayme Budwig and Gigi Fierro held it down for the women's team in throws events outside of javelin. Budwig finished fourth in hammer throw (42.25m) and 10th in the discus (34.52m), while Fierro went fifth in discus (37.03m) and 15th in the hammer (31.56m)

"They were both competing in a Biola singlet for the first time and will continue to improve as they get more comfortable with the new coaching and competition," said Henning.

Heidi Sowers had two top-10 finishes today as she went eighth in both the 100m hurdles (:15.43) and the 400m hurdles (1:07.96).

Biola didn't do too much distance running on this opening weekend, but the team had a solid showing where it did enter. Angel Escobar finished two seconds off his collegiate-best in the 3,000m with an 8:53.07 equating to a 25th-place finish in a field of over 100 runners.

Nic Nelson (1:58.54) and Kaitlyn Natividad (2:26.22) both had top-10 finishes in the 800m. Nelson took sixth, while Natividad managed an eighth-place mark. Finally, Joshua Oglesby ran a lifetime best in the mile, finishing up in 4:32.85.

Aaron Jackson was the highlight in jumps, going 6.55m in the long jump to finish fourth overall. It was not too far off his Biola PR. Sydney Kraslawsky added a top-10 finish in the high jump with a 1.47m to place ninth.

"All in all, I thought our squad that competed did a very good job opening the season up today," said Henning. "We saw a good competitive spirit and a lot of progress from fall until now. We also saw a lot of team support throughout the day, with athletes cheering on different events and showing support for the entire team. As coaches, we love to see that."

Next up for Biola Track & Field is the Beach Opener on March 6-7.
