Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Breathing Room Earned

Biola Men's Basketball uses a double-digit win to create some space in the standings.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Basketball used a 13-0 second-half run to buy itself some breathing room in Saturday's game, and the men also used a win to buy some breathing room for the race to the PacWest Tournament.

The Eagles beat Hawaii Pacific 69-55 to answer back for a loss earlier in the season in Honolulu. Alex Wright paced the team with 18 points and shot the ball on an 8-for-14 clip, much to the liking of a group of about 70 special guests joining the game for the Biola Men's Basketball alumni reunion.

Hawaii Pacific led for about seven minutes of this game, but by the end of the second half it was a game that had the feel like it was Biola in charge all night long. The team scored 13-straight points between the 16:29 and 13:07 marks in the second half.

That scoring took it from a 31-30 lead to a 44-30 lead and really put the game out of reach for the rest of the evening as HPU could never get back to closer than an eight-point margin.

The 14-point margin at the end was one off the largest lead of the night, which was a 67-52 advantage with just over a minute left. During the long scoring run Biola went 6-of-7 from the floor, but scored nothing but two-point shots.

The Eagles were led during that stretch by Wright, who put up half of his total scoring within that three-and-a-half minutes. HPU was 0-for-5 with a pair of turnovers during the game-changing stretch.

Throughout the night, Biola took advantage of the Hawaii Pacific offense being a bit one-dimensional. If things were not running through the Sharks' Ronald Blain (25 points, 11 rebounds) then there wasn't much to celebrate.

Aside from Blain, the 10 other players put up 30 points and shot the ball just 11-for-40 (.275).

Hawaii Pacific made just 32.8 percent of their shots overall, which is the third-lowest by any Eagles' opponent this year. That gave Biola a bit of breathing room as it was not its best shooting night either at 41 percent. The Eagles did shoot 52 percent in the second half, though. And the team continues its climb into the national top-10 in free-throw shooting by going 10-of-11 at the line tonight.

Michael Bagatourian had a solid game. He had 10 second-half points to help power a 14-point, 10-rebound double-double. Chris Rossow (12) and Jesse Elrod (11) joined Wright and Bagatourian in double figures.

Elrod had the two loudest points of the night, and the last points of the night, as he threw down a one-handed jam to put Biola ahead 69-55. It was Biola's answer to a pair of similar dunks put down by the impressive Blain.

The Eagles committed single-digit personal fouls (8) for just the third time this season. It was almost half of the 15 called against HPU. The Sharks also did their job at the stripe, going 9-for-9.

Rossow shined in getting the start at point guard. He tacked on six assists to go with his 12 points, three steals and four rebounds while playing a full 40 for Biola.

The win improves the Eagles to 14-11 overall and 10-9 in PacWest Conference play. With three games left in the PacWest schedule, Biola is in fifth place in the conference standings. The team has a one-game lead over Hawaii Hilo and one-and-a-half game lead over Academy of Art who is currently the first team out of the PacWest tournament.

Next up for the Eagles is the second-to-last home game of the season. This coming Saturday (Feb. 22) Biola hosts Holy Names (8-16, 6-12 PacWest) for a 2 p.m. tip-off.
