Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Eagles Clinch Playoff Berth & Drop 113

Biola Men's Basketball saw a scoring uptick on Saturday, right when it needed it.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Men's Basketball was limited to just a seven-man rotation on Saturday afternoon, which is not an ideal lineup size for a run-and-gun game in which both teams top 100 points.

But, the men dug in and got the job done against the visiting Holy Names Hawks, matching their season-high in scoring with 113 points in a 113-102 win. The Eagles also set a new season-best for points in a half with a 60-point first 20 minutes.

The win allows Biola to let out a big sigh of relief as it's now officially clinched a berth in the PacWest Conference Championship Tournament. The team sits fifth, which is precisely where it wants to stay in order to set up a more favorable run through the bracket.

The Eagles have a 15-11 overall record and an 11-9 PacWest Conference record with two games left in the season slate.

Saturday's action was run-and-gun right from the outset of the game. The two teams began the game shooting well over 60 percent from the floor and combined for 35 points in the first seven minutes of play.

Biola was getting anything and everything to fall through the bucket in this one, particularly anything coming off the hands of Chris Rossow and Whitten Dominguez.

Holy Names was within single digits for much of the first half, with Biola really coming on strong over the final few minutes just before the break. BU finished the first half on an 18-9 run where the Eagles' sharpshooters made six of the teams' nine efforts from the floor.

The scoring during that stretch was distributed pretty evenly as six of the Eagles' seven men dropped in at least one field goal.

Biola shot 68 percent in the first half, including 7-for-13 from three-point range, to hold a commanding 60-44 halftime lead. The Eagles turned the ball over just four times in the half and took advantage of Rossow, Dominguez and Alex Wright all scoring double figures in the first-half alone.

The lead ballooned bigger through the first 10 minutes or so of half two as the Eagles did not slow down a single bit. The Eagles began the second half by making 10 of their first 13 chances from the field and saw their lead quickly go from 16 all the way up to 26.

Impressively, the Holy Names team did not back down in the slightest as the game got down into the latter stages. The Eagles' small rotation began to show a bit of wear and tear as the number of fouls called climbed and HNU took full advantage.

The Hawks outscored Biola 40-25 over the final 12 minutes, but it still was not enough to get the NorCal team back to anything closer than the 11-point final margin.

Biola was still shooting the ball extremely efficiently during that late run from HNU, going 10-for-17, but the Eagles no longer had the benefit of the three-ball as their outside scoring drastically decreased.

Second-chance points were the bread and butter for Holy Names in this game. The Hawks had more offensive rebounds (17) than they did defensive (16) and it equated to an impressive 19 second-chance points.

Biola dominated the painted area with 58 points down low. It was probably Chris Rossow who was doing the most down there, having a dangerous game showcasing his ability to penetrate and find his way to the rim.

Rossow finished the game as the leading scorer with 26 points. He continues his excellent shot selection, going 10-for-14 from the floor in this one. Whitten Dominguez scored a career-high 24 points in 36 minutes shooting 80 percent from the floor and leading the team with four made three-pointers.

Biola finished the game shooting at a 67 percent clip and added 17 points from the free-throw line. All five starters had double-digit scoring games with Alex Wright scoring 19, Michael Bagatourian 17 and Jesse Elrod 15.

After this exhausting effort the Eagles have to turn right around and play at Fresno Pacific (10-16, 8-12 PacWest) on Monday night at 7:30 p.m.
