Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Solid Start, Solid Finish, Messy Middle

Biola drops one to Chaminade as 'Swords take advantage of 19-2 run in half two.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola used its length on the defensive end to keep the game close for about 25 minutes or so on Thursday night, but could never get much of a groove going on offense in an 84-72 home loss to Chaminade.

The Eagles ended up with nine blocks in the game, with Solomon Ruddell having four, Jesse Elrod having three and Whitten Dominguez having perhaps the loudest and most memorable.

The nine stuffs is a new season-best and allowed the home team to keep the game within single digits as late as within the 13-minute mark in the second half.

A 19-2 run from Chaminade between 13:56 and 8:44 ultimately put the game out of reach for the Eagles. Bill Awet heating up from three was the key to that long run. He had nine of his 13 points during that five-minute stretch.

Tyler Cartaino, who led the Silverswords with a 23-point night, also chipped in to steer that run with a hefty seven points during the span.

Biola went just 1-for-8 during that span, trying to force shots while looking to keep up with the up-tempo offense Chaminade was taking advantage of. Chaminade was 6-for-10 during the same time and a perfect 6-for-6 at the line.

After that, the lead would balloon to as wide as 25 points in favor of the 'Swords. There was not much Biola could do to keep up, but the defense never gave in and Biola was able to outscore Chaminade 25-12 over the final six minutes and change to make the game respectable again.

Marquise Mosley was the biggest contributor during that stretch, piling on 10 points on the merit of 3-for-3 field goal shooting and being perfect from the free-throw line. Biola was 5-for-5 from deep during that stretch run, despite shooting just 4-for-15 from three-point range the rest of the game.

Alex Wright led the team with 19 points and seven rebounds on a 7-for-11 shooting performance. He helped the Eagles improve their shooting just a bit in the second half after making just 41 percent in the first.

Michael Bagatourian and Solomon Ruddell also had seven boards to tie for the team lead, but Biola got absolutely lambasted in that category on this night, conceding 46 rebounds to CUH while bringing down just 32 of their own. It's the largest negative rebounding margin of the year for this BU team.

Mosley (15), Ruddell (14) and Chris Rossow (11) all scored in double figures for BU. Ruddell had what was probably his best game of the season before fouling out. He had 14 points, seven rebounds and four blocks in just 18 minutes. He shot 6-for-8 and was 2-for-3 from the line.

The loss is a sour start to the week for Biola, but the real important game on the schedule for this week is coming up Saturday afternoon against Hawaii Pacific. The Eagles host the Sharks (9-14, 7-9 PacWest) at 3:30 p.m. It's the third-to-last home game of the 2019-20 season.

Biola's record fell to 13-11 (9-9 PacWest) with tonight's loss.
