Match Recap: Women's Tennis | | Brandon Taylor, Assistant Sports Information Director

Under The Lights

The Eagles didn’t let Azusa Pacific get away easy, battling under the Biola Tennis Center lights.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- With the men's match going well over an hour longer than scheduled, Biola Women's Tennis didn't get started until the flood lights turned on at the Biola Tennis Center.

Even with the delay, the Eagles were locked in against No. 14 Azusa Pacific and showed little signs of intimidation against a team that had advanced to the NCAA quarterfinals a year ago.

Nowhere was that more apparent than with the freshmen tandem Colbeyshae Emery and Brooke Fager, both of whom spent their entire night playing the top two players from Azusa Pacific who led the Cougars through the NCAA tournament a year ago.

Both Emery and Fager were reliably aggressive throughout their doubles and singles fixtures and it paid dividends more often than not. The pair were on serve in their doubles match at 2-3 down when Azusa Pacific clinched the doubles point. Then each woman also broke their opponents serve multiple times in singles to put pressure on their opponents.

Emery was up 2-0 in her second set and had momentum in the next game until Petra Ivankovic broke Emery's serve. Fager was also up 2-1 in her second set and blasted several winners past Anna Savchenko to place Fager on even footing with her opposite for the majority of the match.

Courts one and two ended up taking the longest in the dual match. And the Cougars had clinched by the time Ivankovic and Savchenko won. Allison Torres shows the greatest improvement in her second set and won four games after losing her first set 6-0. Anna Hartmann also showed fight in her second set before dropping the match 6-2, 6-3.

The Eagles have two more matches this week, both of which will be played on the road. Biola will travel to Newport Beach on Thursday to take on Concordia at 2 p.m.
