Tennis Teams Battle Concordia

Men’s and Women’s Tennis each had their bright spots in losses against Concordia on Thursday.

NEWPORT BEACH, Calif. --- Biola Men's and Women's Tennis headed out to Newport Beach for their second match of the week against a PacWest opponent on Thursday, playing well-regarded Concordia teams in a matinee.

With a plethora of courts available at the Tennis Club at Newport Beach, the matches had concurrent starts: women opening with doubles and the men with singles. Concordia opened up with the doubles point on the women's side and eventually took a 5-2 victory while the CUI men's team narrowly escaped Biola in singles and clinched a 4-3 win.

Head Coach David Goodman tweaked his doubles lineup slightly on the women's side and earned a win at the No. 3 flight as a result. The reunion of Ines Diaz and Allison Torres earned a 6-2 win to even up doubles at 1-1. But even with Colbeyshae Emery and Brooke Fager's hard work to pull out their set, CUI's No. 1 pair sealed the doubles point by a score of 6-4.

The Eagles responded by winning two of the first four singles matches to finish to make the score of the dual 3-2. Playing for the first time in nine days, Madison Swaney flew past her opponent at the No. 6 flight 6-2, 6-2. And Emery spun a momentous victory at No. 1 win with a straight-set win over All-PacWest player Ghazal Pakbaten, who has played on Iran's Fed Cup team.

Outside of the two points, BLT's best success in singles came from Fager, who came within a tiebreak of winning her first set at No. 2. That long battle to 6-7 in the first made Fager's the longest singles match of the dual and ended with the 5-2 win overall for Concordia.

Biola also had a win at the No. 1 line on the men's side with Alexei Prokopchuk coming back from a set down to take sets two and three by 6-4 and 6-3 scores. Derek James also won his match, concluded with a win in a tiebreak, to push his winning streak to four-straight singles fixtures. But Concordia opened singles play with three straight-set wins to take a 3-0 lead and clinched the match with a three-set win of its own against Edwyn Ramos.

Ramos played very well to win his first set 6-3 and had match point in the second set before Marlon Wilken managed to stay alive.

But even the clinch wouldn't prevent the Eagles from playing the match through with effort and determination. Biola Men's Tennis took all three doubles flights and played down the wire on courts one and two. Prokopchuk and Ramos won the final two games of their set to win 7-5 while Quentin Lau and Derek James came out of top of their tiebreaker to win their first match of the year as a doubles team.

On top of that, Biola Men's Tennis is now 9-5 on the year in doubles play.

Women's Tennis will head to Fresno on Saturday afternoon for their next match at Fresno Pacific. Men's Tennis has a full week to prepare for a road match of their own against Redlands.
