Another Donut

Biola hangs a zero on its opponents for the second time on opening day, beating CSUEB 2-0.

IRVINE, Calif. --- As it turned out, the two teams in Biola's second game on Friday could've just played one inning and then call it a day. The Eagles beat CSU East Bay 2-0 with both runs coming in the bottom of the first inning.

The scoring came in support of Paula Damas, who went five shutout innings before handing the ball off to Jennifer Morinishi to finish the job off.

"It felt great to be back on the field with the team," said senior starting pitcher Paula Damas. "We definitely bonded together and just did the little things in order to come out with a win."

Kylie Velasco was the impetus behind Biola's run scoring in that first inning. The junior second baseman hit a one-out triple to score Ruth Munoz and then trotted home herself a few pitches later when Kayla Neff turned on a 2-1 pitch and singled to right field.

Munoz had three hits and scored three runs between both games today, and also made her presence known in the field with three putouts and three assists.

"Ruth definitely had an awesome day. She was at shortstop, which is different from her regular spot at third base and was making every play she could out there," said Damas. "In the batter's box she also did the little things: bunting and swinging away, just doing whatever she could to get on."

The Eagles got three hits in the first inning, but then could only muster up one more hit over the rest of the game against CSUEB's Abby Greer, who threw the whole six innings in a tough-luck loss.

"I think our team did great today overall. Even though it was our first game we looked like we had been playing together for a while," said Damas. "We really did great in setting the tone for the rest of the season and I'm so excited to see what we do as this season progresses!"

Thankfully, that would be all the offense the team would need because of the great work from Damas, Morinishi and the Biola defense. The senior started only allowed two base runners during her five innings of work. She was super economical, only needing 54 pitches to get through five frames with two strikeouts and no walks.

Morinishi had a sticky situation in her first inning of work, allowing two base hits to get into a runners on the corners situation with two outs. But, she mixed her pitches effectively and got a swinging strikeout to get out of the sixth unscathed. She retired the side in order with two strikeouts to close the game out and get her first save of the season.

The win moves Biola to 2-0 to begin the new year. It was CSU East Bay's first game and they dropped to 0-1. Next up for Biola is a 10 a.m. game on Saturday vs. CSU Dominguez Hills (1-0). The Toros beat Azusa Pacific 12-0 in their season opener on Friday.
