Stuck On Base

Biola strands 12 runners throughout the game in gut-wrenching 3-2 loss.

IRVINE, Calif. --- Timely extra-base hits by its opponent mixed with a handful of missed opportunities on offense led Biola Softball to its first loss of the 2020 season on Saturday, and it came in gut-wrenching fashion.

The Eagles dropped the contest to CSU Dominguez Hills by a final score of 3-2, with all of the scoring coming in the first three innings. Biola stranded 12 runners on base in this one, including stranding the bases loaded in their bottom half of the seventh inning.

Kylie Velasco and Kayla Neff both walked to lead off the seventh inning in promising fashion for the Eagles. They forced the CSU Dominiguez Hills head coach to bring in his ace pitcher, Alyssa Olague, who helped CSUDH beat APU 12-0 Friday.

Olague hit the first batter she faced, Ari Gonzales, to load the bases with no outs and give Biola a perfect opportunity to lay down a bunt and tie the game up at three and at the very least force extra innings.

The only problem is that BU couldn't quite get a bunt down. The first two batters popped out to swing the momentum fully in favor of Olague and the Toros as Tori Apodaca came to the plate with the bases still loaded and now representing Biola's last hope.

Apodaca worked a 1-2 count, but then went down swinging and the game came to an end in favor of CSUDH. The contest's result moves both teams to 2-1 on the young season.

CSU Dominguez Hills got its runs in the first and third innings. A one-out triple from Chenoa Au was followed by a sacrifice fly, which was the first run allowed all season by the Biola staff. Biola answered back in the bottom half of the first as Ari Gonzales drove home Ruth Munoz with a single.

The lead went to 3-1 in the third as a two-out triple from Raquel Jaime brought home two runs. Jaime was responsible for driving in all three Toros runs on the day.

Gonzales once again drove home Munoz in the bottom half of the third, but those two runs would not be enough. The Eagles stranded runners in scoring position in the fourth inning, fifth inning and seventh inning.

Biola managed eight hits in the game, but they had just one extra-base hit. Munoz stayed hot, going 3-for-3 with a walk. Ari Gonzales also continued her strong start to the year with a two-hit, two-RBI game. She now leads the team in RBI this year.

The Eagles' staff did enough to win the ballgame, getting great innings from Paula Damas, Jennifer Morinishi and at the end of the game, Paige Austin.

Damas got the start and went two innings with just one run on one hit. Morinishi did the bulk of the lifting in the circle, logging 3.2 innings and giving up two runs on four hits. Austin kept Biola in the game by finishing the final 1.2 innings in scoreless fashion with three Ks and just one hit.

The Eagles face Chico State (2-0) at 3 p.m. on Saturday afternoon at Great Park. The game will have live stats at https://portal.stretchinternet.com/cui/.
