Game Recap: Volleyball |

Other Eagles Spoil Opener

Biola falls to Concordia Irvine in three sets in its home opener.

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Volleyball's 2019 home opener was spoiled by an upstart Concordia Irvine side that played nearly error-free volleyball and used quick set starts to take the match in three (22-25; 20-25; 14-25).

The first game was the most competitive with the two sides each trading runs of three to start and then staying within one point of one another until the game was tied at 11-11 on Sabrina Winslow kill.

Then, the visitors strung together four in a row before Biola won five of the next six and all of a sudden we were tied at 17 and seemingly locked in another ultra-competitive, throwback Biola - Concordia Irvine rivalry match.

Things would end up tied as late as 21-21 after a Vanessa Garcia service ace capped a three-point Biola run to come from behind. But, things went in favor of Concordia in that opening game when CUI managed a block and couple of kills to win four of the next five rallies and go into the side switch with a one-set lead.

After that, the match was thrust into a different dimension when Concordia got off to a 6-1 start in the second game and 6-2 start in the third that Biola had a hard time overcoming. The Eagles brought the game close in the second game, even snagging a lead at 14-13 as a Kaitil O'Brien ace capped a long stretch of successful rallies for BU and had the home crowd erupting.

Unfortunately, Concordia won eight of the next 10 to put the set back out of reach. Then, in the third set, the visiting Eagles hit the lights out with 19 kills and a near-.500 attacking percentage to cruise to their third PacWest victory of the year. It is CUI's first win over Biola since the 2014 season.

The visitors hit .313 and 18 more kills in the match. It was that efficiency that made all the difference in the metrics as Biola had similar metrics by all other accounts but simply couldn't put the ball away with as much consistency.

Concordia spread its attack well with four different players leading the victorious effort with 11 kills apiece. Biola's leading attacker was Sabrina Winslow with eight.

Abigail Copeland had a solid effort in her collegiate home debut. The middle blocker had a team-high four blocks and also had four kills on a clip of .286. That attacking percentage was second only to Winslow's .318 on a night when Biola hit .157 as a team.

The loss drops Biola back to an even 6-6 and 3-1 in PacWest play. Concordia improves to 9-5 (3-2 PacWest). The Eagles have tough slate moving forward, playing Point Loma and Azusa Pacific on the road next week.
