Weekly notes for Women's Soccer September 15 to 21

Locked In For Saturday

Biola Women’s Soccer will look to create the beginnings of a winning streak with its single match this week.

September 17, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif.
--- In spite of being on the tailend of a four-day roadtrip in the Pacific Northwest, the Biola Eagles played like a team that was energized by its match away from home at Concordia Portland last Saturday. With some help from a large contingent of fans at Hillken Community Stadium, Head Coach Erin Brunelle's group got its first win of the season with two quick goals near the start of the second half and great defense.

Goalkeeper Christina Rodriguez was named PacWest Defender of the Week on Monday after delivering a clean sheet against the Cavaliers and collecting a total of 11 saves during Biola's two matches. But the line in front of her was also stellar, particularly in the Concordia match, as the Eagles won the ball time and again while making an impact in the attack. No defender's influence on Biola scoring was larger than Colie Martin's, as the left back made two great runs down the sideline and quality passes to setup goals for Brynne Anderson and Annmarie Alvarez

This week Biola will be back at Al Barbour Field for its second home match of the season and will face its last non-PacWest opponent of the regular season in Cal State San Marcos. Following Saturday's fixture, the Eagles have non-conference matchups with Point Loma and Concordia before starting matches that count toward their PacWest record on October 10.

BIOLA (1-3) vs Cal State San Marcos (1-1-1): Wednesday, Sep. 18 at 7 p.m.\\ Live Stats \\ Live Video
The Eagles are undefeated in their last three meetings with Cal State San Marcos over the past four years. And though all three meetings have been close with a lot of pressure from Cal State San Marcos, the Cougars have only scored one goal over those last three meetings and have lost in a shutout their last three trips to Al Barbour Field. Their 2019 season also has a low-scoring and gritty theme, with just two goals over a win, loss and tie for CSUSM over its first three matches. The Cougars went to overtime in both of their matches last week, pushing Azusa Pacific to OT in Azusa before losing 1-0 and playing Simon Fraser to a scoreless draw in San Marcos this past Saturday. They'll host No. 1-ranked UC San Diego on Thursday afternoon before coming to Biola on Saturday, and that match should be an interesting measure because the Eagles played the Tritons in San Diego two weeks ago.

To take a quick 30,000-foot view, the Cougars reached the CCAA Tournament quarterfinals in 2018 and had a 7-7-4 record with two All-CCAA Honorable Mention student-athletes. Senior midfielder Lauren Perry should be one of the leaders of her team since Perry has started nearly every match of her four-year career in San Marcos and has back-to-back All-CCAA honorable mentions.
