Game Recap: Volleyball |

Closing This Chapter

Biola concludes its season with a 3-0 loss to CSUSM, dropping to 3-5.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- After another long weekend of volleyball, Biola finished off its run at the NCAA Division II West Region Showcase with its first three-set match of the year, sending the lades back to La Mirada earlier in the evening. The only problem was the Eagles ended up on the losing side of all three sets in a 3-0 (22-25; 26-28; 17-25) loss to a ranked CSU San Marcos side.

It was a three-set loss, but the Eagles were competitive in both the first two and had some balls bounced in their favor early on the match could've had a completely different script. As it stands, the Eagles end their time in San Bernardino with a 1-3 record to fall to 3-5 on the season.

Biola fell behind early in the first with the Cougars scratching out six of the match's first eight points. That significant buffer would buoy the CSUSM side for most of the set until they held a commanding 17-9 lead.

Biola worked its way back slowly by winning seven of the next nine points to sit at just a 19-16 disadvantage. The problem was that all but two of those seven points came off fixable mistakes by CSUSM. The Cougars managed to find the fix and held on for the three-point victory in the first game.

The margin shrunk in game two as it took CSUSM five different tries at set point before it finally won 28-26. The Eagles were doubled up early in that game at 8-4, but then a significant run flipped the script and left BU in charge until as late as 18-15. After the 18-15 advantage, the Cougars rattled off eight consecutive gut-wrenching scores to steal the lead and seemingly be primed to win the game.

A solid run of four, that included a pair of big blocks by Abigail Copeland and Co. and a Becca Branch service ace, got the Eagles back into contention at 22-23. CSUSM would open its first chance at set point with a 24-22 lead. Kills by Copeland and Winslow would knot it again and keep the Eagles alive for some free volleyball. The Cougars finally managed to break through at 28-26. CSUSM's final five points of set two all came off of their own kills.

After a scintillating set two, set three is where it became clear that both teams were gassed after the long weekend. The Cougars maintained a quick lead of three to four points through a majority of the third set. That lead lasted them to a 19-16 lead, which set the stage for a strong finish from CSUSM.

The Eagles' dropped six of the final seven points played to make it look a whole lot wider of a victory than it truly was. Abby Brewster had a double-double for Biola in what was a statistically lackluster match for the team. She led the effort with just 13 assists and added 11 digs. The Eagles' leading attacker had just seven kills (Sabrina Winslow), but the team once again won the block battle. This time freshman Abigail Copeland was in on all seven of the team's blocks.

Biola will set this 3-5 preseason aside and now turn its attention to the PacWest Conference season opener this coming Friday night at Holy Names (1-4).
