Game Recap: Volleyball |

Fun Til The Finish

Biola dominates most of the fifth set, but ends up falling 16-14 to lose to UAA.

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. --- It was much, much closer than when the two teams met last week, but Biola Volleyball's 3-2 (17-25; 25-18; 11-25; 25-21; 14-16) loss to Alaska Anchorage is just as heartbreaking. Particularly since Head Coach Aaron Seltzer's side had a match point in the fifth set and just couldn't see it through.

Biola looked all but done following a thorough drubbing by UAA in the third set, but showed some fantastic grit to work its way to a fourth-set win and force an ultra-competitive fifth game for the second time in its last three matches.

The Eagles were on top for just about all of the fifth set, holding as big of a lead as 10-5, but just could not hold on down the stretch seeing the Seawolves improve to 2-0 all-time against BU.

In the match, Sabrina Winslow matched her career-high with 21 kills. In fact, it was her 21st kills that sent Biola into the side switch with an 8-4 advantage. Unfortunately for she and the Eagles, Winslow was kept silent the rest of the way in the fifth, making it tough for Biola to go on any type of run.

The beginning of the backsliding was when UAA won five in a row to take a 10-5 disadvantage and turn it into a 10-10 tie. Even after that BY managed to win the next two rallies to go up 12-10, but a quick answer from the Seawolves made it 12 all and set up the sprint to the finish.

A kill by Madison Beebe, just her third of the match, set BU up with a match point at 14-13 in the fifth. Unfortunately, the Eagles were unable to get anything past that and dropped the game on a kill by UAA's Ellen Floyd, who also had just three kills on the day.

A consistent attack continues to be the hardest thing for these Eagle to establish, hitting just .101 as a team for the match. Winslow led the effort with a .275 mark which is right at her season-best.

Aside from Winslow, just Becca Branch got to double-digits for the Eagles with 11 kills. BU managed two more kills than their opponents, but being at a .101 clip as opposed to .206 held them back.

Abby Brewster made her season debut in this one, entering the match at the start of the fourth set. Her difference was noticeable from the start, landing three kills on three swings and recording eight assists and 10 digs in a solid start to her career.

Vanessa Garcia recorded her fourth double-double in a row with 28 assists and 12 digs.

The loss drops Biola to 2-3 on the season and sets up a 7:30 p.m. matchup with No. 2 CSU San Bernardino (5-0).
