Eagles Tuck In A Win

Biola takes an exhibition win over Chapman thanks to two goals that tucked inside the left post.

August 27, 2019

LA MIRADA, Calif. --- Biola Women's Soccer hosted the Chapman Panthers in an exhibition at Al Barbour Field on Tuesday afternoon as the Eagles prepare to officially open their season on September 5.

A total of 23 student-athletes saw time on the pitch for Head Coach Erin Brunelle's as senior Annmarie Alvarez and freshman Madi Reeves each chipped in goals for Biola's 2-0 victory. It took a bit of time for Biola to really take control of the match as the new roster continued to gel. But at the final whistle the Eagles held the majority of possession and had a 15-to-5 advantage in total shots.

Biola took the initial lead in the 17th minute when Halie Jamir sent a leading pass from the border of the Eagles' offensive third toward the top-right corner of the box. The senior Alvarez took one strong step to the right to get behind the ball and took a shot toward the left upper-90 that the goalkeeper was unable to leap to.

It would be Alvarez' only shot of the match.

That lead was seemingly going to carry Biola into halftime. But Reeves took advantage of the open space and a one-v-one matchup to the right of goal to loop the ball across the goal mouth. Although she had two teammates at the far post, Reeves' ball crossed the goal line right where Alvarez' shot did about 30 minutes earlier and gave her team a two-goal advantage with one half left.

After Briana Ruelas took care of business in goal for the Eagles in the first half with two saves, senior Christina Rodriguez played the entire second half in goal for Biola. With Rodriguez' backline completely in the flow of the match during the second half, the senior's impact would primarily be measured in her great communication from the box because she did not have to make any saves.

Biola limited the visiting Panthers to one cornerkick and one shot during the entire duration of the second half. The Eagles had four corners and 11 shots over that same span.

The Eagles season officially begins with a 7 p.m. match at Al Barbour Field against Cal State LA on Sept. 5. In the meantime, Biola will play another scrimmage at home this coming Saturday against Cal State San Bernardino.
